This rug is a slightly different twist on the other drone rugs with a red, white, and blue palette because it's dark blue field. The planes outlined in red form a central medallion with a few light teal planes outlined in white.
The rug was rotated during photography to show the light and dark side. When the planes' noses are pointed up it's the dark side, when the nose is pointed down it's the slight side. Pile knots, when they are tied, are pulled down and remain oriented down for the life of the rug, and the angle of the threads give the rug a light and dark side. Red War rug with Starbursts
ID# 1561, 91 x 157 cm , Red War rug with Starbursts,
Description: This rug is in new condition. It has been in a series of rug dealers wharehouses since it was woven in the 1990's. Production of Red Rugs stopped in 2003 after Afghan refugee weavers returned to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.
The Kalashnikovs in this rug are well drawn and very accurate. The patterning arond the helicopters give a nice effect, as does the drawing on the tanks. The starburst flowers are a nice touch.
The harlequin pattern helicopters at the toep of the rug are very unusual. A small group of Red Rugs had this desing -only larger motifs- from the 1998-199. .

Red Rug with Bullet Border
ID# 1559, 96 x 155 cm , Red Rug with Bullet Border,
Description: Excellent new condition. Like the other Red Rugs currently available on WarRug.com these rugs have been in a dealer's warehouse since they were woven in 1990's.
The green and red combination in this rug makes it unique and outstanding. Also the small patterns within the different images tie the whole rug together. Also the small tanks are one of the best images in all red rugs.
.

Red War Rug with Planes Shaped as Human Female Figures
ID# 1557, 96 x 160 cm , Red War Rug with Planes Shaped as Human Female Figures,
Description: Beautiful rug. Nicely drawn. The range of image sizes works well: large AK47's, medium size helicopters and tanks, and small airplanes in the background. Good colors. How the topmost tank is loosely drawn is excellent. It is more round than most and it has lots of character.
The bottom of this rug flages out, so it's not very square

The weavers of these rugs were Afghan refugees who returned to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. Red rug with numbered pattern/bullet trim and colored tanks with airplanes throughout
ID# 1556, 96 x 168 cm , Red rug with numbered pattern/bullet trim and colored tanks with airplanes throughout,
Description: This is a classic example of one group of Red war rugs. The spare field with only Armored Personnel Carriers all simply rendered is consistent with one small production. This rug has unusual abrash throughout the field.
The yellow wool is very unusual on the underside of the APCs just below the middle of the rug. The other pastel greens, pinks, and light blue are also unusual. One note, the two sections of purple "text" near the bottom are aniline dye. Analine dyes are mostly abandoned because they are fugitive. One sees this purple mostly in rural rugs from Afghanistan, and we haven't seen it in Red Rugs previously.

Blue Plane Pattern on Tan Field War Rug
ID# 1552, 87 x 130 cm , Blue Plane Pattern on Tan Field War Rug,

The car border and central column give the rug a unique design. The use of very small motifs in the panels around the tanks set the field apart from the borders (and central column) in a beautiful way.

One by two inch section of old moth damage where moths have eaten down to the knots. Also, the light blue is a fugitive dye (a common color in Baluchi rugs from western Afghanistan) and it has tip fading.
.

Dark Blue War Rug with Multi-colored Air Planes
ID# 1550, 94 x 132 cm , Dark Blue War Rug with Multi-colored Air Planes,
Description: The brightly colored airplanes in the background of this rug make it stand out. The tanks are rendered in the classic "Ten Tank" style and colors, but the light planes make it really sing. The light blue colors are very nice and contrast beautifully with the dark field and its rich abrash. The way that lightly colored cars are dispersed around the border works very well and gives this piece a strong rhythm. .

Classic Red Rug
ID# 1548, 104 x 160 cm , Classic Red Rug,
Description: This is an idiosyncratic Red War Rug. The text looks distinctly backwards, as opposed to the usual indecipherable text blocks. The arrangement of the helicopters and tanks creates an all-over feel that works well. How the images are colored with random shifts inside a number and as decoration is interesting and works well. The bullet border is unusual in that the bullets are not outlined with contrasting color.
This rug is in new condition. Red Rugs were woven in Pakistan during the 1990s until the international community forced the Taliban out of Afghanistan in 2001. The weavers of these rugs were Afghan refugees who returned to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. Orange Ten Tank Rug
ID# 1543, 142 x 84 cm , Orange Ten Tank Rug,
Description: The muted blues of the border and flowers of this rug provide a soothing coolness to contrast the vibrance of the orange thread used in the center. In addition, the brown serves to neutralize the color palette overall, while still allowing the tanks and flowers to have a certain luminance within the composition of the rug.
While this Ten Tank design is similar to other rugs recently available, the structure of this rug is very unusual. It has wool wefts, which is very rare in contemporary Baluchi rugs. .

Red Background Boxy Tank
ID# 1542, 142 x 84 cm , Red Background Boxy Tank ,
Description: The deep blue base of this rug is intertwined with beautiful dark brown figures of planes and cars. Dark Parachutes Stinger Missile Rug
ID# 1531, 112 x 180 cm , Dark Parachutes Stinger Missile Rug,
Description: The wool in this rug is all high quality and spun by hand. The colors are all natural dyes. The design is one from 2003 when two examples were woven in full color. This rug is one of seven woven in this earth tone color palette.
These rugs are part of warrug.com's project empowerment. We have helped women in Pakistan set up independent weaving operations, and that is where this rug originates. We work closely with a small group of weavers. This rug came directly from the weavers so the condition is perfect.
The wool is thick, lush and dense. It is soft and susterous. The hand spun wool threads are thick guage so they don't yield the highest knots per inch. The knotting is very dense, as you can see in the photos of the back of the rug, where the design is perfectly clear on the back as on the front.
.

Dark Parachutes Stinger Missile Rug
ID# 1530, 117 x 183 cm , Dark Parachutes Stinger Missile Rug,

Good Quality Large Size Blue Ten Tank Rug
ID# 1529, 119 x 198 cm , Good Quality Large Size Blue Ten Tank Rug,
Description: This is a classic version of this design. Years ago, most of these rugs were brown on brown; but the blue and brown work better together. The blue and brown compliment each other well within a limited value range (range of light and dark) The color palette is limited and very subtle. The five borders are typical of this type. .

Blue Ten Tank Rug with Bright Red Airplanes
ID# 1528, 107 x 188 cm , Blue Ten Tank Rug with Bright Red Airplanes,
Description: New condition piece with good colors. Car border indicates the 2000's. The red airplanes really pop on blue field while brown give a good chromatic foundation. The writing on the sides of the tanks says, "tank", but it has become abstracted in this example. .

Two Red Tanks War Rug
ID# 1527, 117 x 180 cm , Two Red Tanks War Rug,
Description: Really good example of a 1980's rug. The pattern (with a series of small medallions with a jagged white outline) is an old one documented in books about antique rugs. There are similar contemporary designs which originate in Khorrassan around Mashad in eastern Iran. The Iranian iterations of this pattern are red and black, typically with a black field, and the medallions a mix of red, orange and white.

This rug is in very good condition but has a couple of noteworthy condition issues: First, a bright pink color used in tertiary images is fugitive, so there is tip fading. Secondly, there is considerable sarnach as well as short lines where the pile is displaced by very depressed warps. .

Ten Tank War Rug with Beautiful Blue Field
ID# 1526, 101 x 196 cm , Ten Tank War Rug with Beautiful Blue Field,
Description: This is a dark take on the 10 Tank War Rug style. The 16 tanks it actually sports are surrounded by first a geometric design then a second, more floral outer border. There are small red and orange planes filling the negative space between the tanks. The colors overall are quite somber. .

Green AK War Rug
ID# 1523, 109 x 157 cm , Green AK War Rug,

Najibullah Production Red Rug 1
ID# 1522, 104 x 150 cm , Najibullah Production Red Rug 1 ,
Description: This rug is in perfect and new condition. It has never been used on the floor.
This rug is interesting because it has features of a Najibullah Rug but the design of a red rug. Specifically the red wool kilim end with one blue stripe indicates Najibullah style. Secondarily, In the foremost stocks of the large AK47's are blue with white diagonal lines, which is typical of patterns in Najibullah Rugs. Thirdly, the planes, at topmost for example, are drawn like Najibullah rug with little rods sticking out of the wings.

This rugs difference with Najibullah rugs are twofold. The classic Najibullah rug from the 1990's is densely knotted with very fine, or 'Beljik' wool. Rug 1522 has better wool than most red rugs but not the 'Beljik' wool of the Najibullah rugs. .

Pink Red Rug
ID# 1521, 101 x 153 cm , Pink Red Rug,
Description: This is a classic 1990's red rug, just in pink. The wool is pink, not washed to make red wool pink. A nice feature in this rug is how the red outlines around images pop out. .

Red Tora Bora with Tanks
ID# 1517, 99 x 148 cm , Red Tora Bora with Tanks,

White Red Rug with Land Mines

One unusual thing about this rug is the border is dark, not golden colored like most. .

Najibullah versus the Taliban
ID# 1513, 101 x 142 cm , Najibullah versus the Taliban,

Abstract Horsemen Rug with Dark Border
ID# 1494, 77 x 132 cm , Abstract Horsemen Rug with Dark Border,
Description: This is a newer rug. Pile wool shows stray fibers which were missed by shearer's clippers. Lightest color is undyed wool. Cobalt blue field is contrasted beautifully by the dark Prussian blue border. Bright oranges and reds pop from the rug.
Abstracted horseback riders carrying rifles are the primary motif of this rug. The riders become more abstracted as the eye travels from the bottom of the rug upwards, where the top figure missing its head. An assortment of birds and other animals fill out the rest of the field.

This is another rug offered for the first time in late 2021 which were collected by warrug as examples of styles, patterns, and variations of designs.

This rug is significant because it shows the middle ground of abstraction in horsemen rugs. Horsemen go from totally realistic like this rug, this rug, and this rug. Another variation is a pictorial rug like this horsemen rug drawn from the Afghan currency, the Afghani. This horseman rug is a design more often seen in Iranian Balouch rugs. Some rugs show complete abstracted men on horseback images.

Small Horsemen Rug with Tank, Bus and Helicopters
ID# 1490, 81 x 142 cm , Small Horsemen Rug with Tank, Bus and Helicopters,
Description: The horsemen we find in this rug are one of the oldest images in carpets dating back to the oldest rug called the Pazyrik. In the Pazyrik the implication, when combined with the other image , a reindeer, is a hunting scene. In this rug I am reminded of a film interview of Ahmed Shah Masud. The interview was in French and when he was asked his favorite way to get around, ""A horse"", What is his favorite car? ""A horse"". New condition and apparently unused. Rug still has stray extra long pile threads which escaped the shearer's clippers. Moderately abstracted horsemen and images of Afghan buses, one tank, a series of riflesand two helicopters. Natural colored wool border with flower design. Very nice blue field color. Also note the peacocks scattered with guns and abstract designs throughout border..

Clock Tower with Helicopters 2 War Rug
ID# 1489, 84 x 148 cm , Clock Tower with Helicopters 2 War Rug,
Description: This rug, like its mate of similar weave and design, #1484 is the most interesting contemporary rug I have seen. While the helicopters are somewhat non discript, these rugs speak to the International Coalition's actions in western Afghanistan like no other rugs that we have seen.

This rug appears to be woven by the same artist as rug #1484. Besides the similarity of design, the similarity of material is exact. Rug appears new without any floor wear. Fuzz still on back of knots. There is one condition issue of note: a two inch cut that runs above first palm tree on left side, just above red line over palm tree. Four warps are exposed for two inches, but the warps are unbroken. The wefts are broken and two columns of green and yellow marled knots are missing where cut is. Two columns of 11 knots each are missing. (I will repair this or have it repaired and make note here)

Dark Blue Ten Tank Rug with Muted Palette War Rug (Exhibition history #26)
ID# 1487, 84 x 137 cm , Dark Blue Ten Tank Rug with Muted Palette War Rug (Exhibition history #26),
Description: The war rug is in like new condition. The olive greens, like ninety nine percent of Baluchi rugs from western Afghanistan has tip fading. The olive green, on back is more vivid, but on face it a lighter more brownish green. The blue filed color has very nice and subtle abrash. The blue color is a slightly tinted Prussian blue. These more recent examples of the Ten Tank design are better executed than the earlier brown ones. This rug is more finely knotted of better wool than examples from the 1990's. The blue field works really well. Also the combination of the large motifs, tanks, and the smaller motifs, birds, rifles, tertiary motifs. There is a good dispersion of colors in the tertiary motifs: olive green, maroon, tan, brown, and burnt sienna. In the earliest example of this rug the word ""Tank Tank"" was clearly written in Farsi script on the sides of each tank. In recent examples though, the script is nearly illegible.

This rug is the mate of #1482.

Vertical Format Urban Scene
ID# 1486, 79 x 137 cm , Vertical Format Urban Scene,
Description: This rug was selected from several examples of similar scenes. This rug is notable and selected for its fine knotting, good colors, funky vehicle running along the bottom and writing. This is perhaps an variation of an excellent shown at Canada's Textile Museum (example). The short pile and dense knotting put this rug in small group of fine pictorial scenes. The red text in the upper right appears to say ""American"" in english text and Farsi is unreadable to this writer except for date. Also notable is the red, outlined in orange, rifle or grenade launcher in the bottom left corner. The vehicles running in a line in middle ground are intersting. They are like vehicles in this land mine war rug (example).

2003 Rows of Weapons War Rug
ID# 1485, 84 x 150 cm , 2003 Rows of Weapons War Rug,
Description: This is a contemporary example of a war rug pattern dating to the mid 1980's. (example). The drawing is simplified and exagerated compared to earlier examples, but the overall effect of this rug is excellent. The tan images are outlined in red which pops from the blue background. Similarly, the maroon images are outline in tan making them pop from navy blue background. The navy color of this rug is particularly beautiful and an unusual specific shade of blue. Tan border functions well framing the field of war images. The border design is found in regular afghan Baluchi rugs from Herat and Farah provinces..

Tan Field Peacock and Car War Rug (Exhibition #26)
ID# 1483, 84 x 140 cm , Tan Field Peacock and Car War Rug (Exhibition #26),
Description: The color palate of this rug is beautiful and the dispersion of bright red leaves throughout field ads a brilliant sparkle to this design. This is the first rug of this design that we have received since 2000. the field in this rug is darker tan than most. The colors are harmonious with the tan, burgundy, maroon and dark blue haromoniously working together. Also the myriad of small designs scattered throughout field works well..

Dark Blue Ten Tank Rug with Light Blue and Pink War Rug
ID# 1482, 87 x 137 cm , Dark Blue Ten Tank Rug with Light Blue and Pink War Rug,
Description: The drawing, colors, and pattern of this rug are excellent. The blue is dark Prussian blue. The light blue is not wool and feels like silk, but it may be mercerized cotton or synthetic. Note, only the light sky blue is not wool. The use of vivid colors is one of the best qualities in tribal rugs. (web blog link to afghan weavers) The freedom of expression and joy of life expresssed in vivid colors, like the light blue and pink in this rug (or the flourescents in other rugs and bags) give this rug a vitality not found in workshop and city rugs. The scattering of small areas of bright colors on dark field works very well, and has a n overall most beautiful effect..

Abstract Victoria St Landscape War Rug
ID# 1481, 89 x 145 cm , Abstract Victoria St Landscape War Rug,
Description: After much debate, two viewers of warrug.com have convinced me of the origin of this image. It is the Blue Mosque on Victoria Street in Singapore.

I created warrug.com to foster discussions about war rugs and to solicit input from people with knowledge diverse from mine, so I am happy to be corrected. Please keep the suggestions, corrections, and ideas coming.

Previous description

This rug appears to be an abstract version of a rug like this (example) which Max Allen has suggested is Victoria Station in Melborne Australia. The background urban skyline is really beautiful. The similarity between the helicopters at the bottom and the helicopters on the right side is interesting. The main border of this rug is a very old pattern found in antique rugs from the Caucuses to the Afghanistan. The color and wool are reminiscent of Mushwani rugs from before the Afghan Soviet war..

Beautiful Color Tank Rug
ID# 1479, 79 x 153 cm , Beautiful Color Tank Rug,
Description: The best quality of this rug is it exceptional color. First of all, the variety of blues used in the field are all lovely and contrast beautifully in simple horizontal bands. The birds between the columns of tanks ads a more gentle and traditional accent image.

Overall condition excellent. Full pile, good sheen. This rug is above average for contemporary rug..

Tanks, Helicopters and Stylized Fighter Jet War Rug
ID# 1478, 92 x 148 cm , Tanks, Helicopters and Stylized Fighter Jet War Rug,
Description: Very good quality and excellent condition. The border design, color and wool suggests this rug is closely related to classic ""10 Tank"" rugs in spite of difference in field design. The more brighly colored field images: red tanks, green tanks, red fighters give this rug a refreshing brilliance uncommon in ""10 Tank"" rugs. Blue wool is good quality as is blue dye.

The three columns of skinny images on each side and center of field are fighter jets, which have suffered what Nigel Nendon calls ""progressive abstraction"". Example, examle..

Helicopter Border Version of Tank, Bomber Helicopter Style War Rug
ID# 1476, 92 x 140 cm , Helicopter Border Version of Tank, Bomber Helicopter Style War Rug,
Description: This rug appears to be the latest iteration of the Tank, Helicopter, Bomber Style War Rug. The tank and helicopter motifs are reminiscent of Tank, Heli, Bomber style, but more importantly the pile wool, specific shade of blue used in field color, and most indicatively, the warp threads. The design has changed a bit and it is very interesting watching it change.

The overall design of this rug is successfull, particularly for the dispersion of small areas of colors and a variety of motif sizes. The poorly defined border of somewhat inarticulate helicopter is not particularly effective, but it does show will to innovate. One of best design element is the top row of helicopters treads where blue squares are outlined in red. Beautiful..

Small Ten Tank Style War Rug Featuring Black Tanks. (Exhibition #26)
ID# 1475, 79 x 145 cm , Small Ten Tank Style War Rug Featuring Black Tanks. (Exhibition #26),
Description: The wool and knotting of this rug is not like Ten Tank rugs while the design is quite similar. The design difference is the use of different colors in rows of tanks. The sue of black, red, and golden yellow on tanks sets them off very effectively from blue field and blue and tan border. Its difficult to say absolutely, but this rug appears not to be a ""Ten Tank"" rug in spite of its design. Ten Tank rugs tend to have a straight fiber slightly sharp pile wool, and ropey brown warps. This rugs pile wool is curly and soft and its warps are very fine quality blond wool. As mentioned above also, the colors in this rug are not usual. Typically Ten Tank rugs are brown, tan, and blue. Description: Warrug.com has not had a ""Geometric Medallion"" style war rug for ten years. Example. This is still in new condition. There is still the fuzz on the back that shows rug has never been used on the floor. Besides the fact this style rug is remarkably rare, the most remarkable feature of this rug its helicopter border. This rug was not immediately recognized as a war rug because its border did not stand out. On second viewing it is quite remarkable. The arches drawn in the body of the helicopter are surprising. This is the only rug we have seen which uses this border..

2007 City Scene Sumac
ID# 1468, 127 x 185 cm , 2007 City Scene Sumac,
Description: Gul I'Birjista is the name of this type of carpet which combines sumac and pile. Parsons says it originated in Afghanistan during the 1960s. In our regular rug stock we currently have two sizes Gul I'Birjista rugs, each size originating from a unique town. Of the scores of these rugs, this is the only one featuring war motifs; specifically, an airplane in the top right corner. The background of most Gul I'Birjista rugs is an off white sumac, usually woven in a medium quality. The pile is dense and compact. This rug features very old fashioned style kilim skirts of red and blue horizontal stripes. Of the 100's of Gul I'Birjista rugs I have seen, less than one percent are pictorial. This is an unusual and collectible rug at a good price because of its recent vintage..

The clarification of the origin of this design came from a viewer of warrug.com. Getting feedback and community driven input is the reason I started this site in the 1990's, so if you have any ideas, input, corrections or suggestions, please contact me.

Previous and outdated description:
Max Allen, in his descriptions in Canada's Textile Museum Exhibition, describes this image thus:
""Flinders Street Station in Melbourne was built in 1854. It is the oldest urban railway station in Australia, and the busiest station in the southern hemisphere.""
. I was told by an Afghan friend that it is the Sultan Hussein Shrine, but I suspect Max is correct..

Special Herat Mosque War Rug
ID# 1075, 78 x 129 cm , Special Herat Mosque War Rug,
Description: This rug is a special example of this design. It took years of bargaining for my Afghan friend to sell it. He is from Herat, and the rug hung on the wall near the door of his shop. it is very similar to this rug.

This red, yellow, and blue rug features an abstracted depiction of a scene in front of the Friday Mosque in Herat, Afghanistan. Abstracted yellow planes fly against a navy sky above the large mosque on the right side of the field, spanning the length of the rug. Trucks drive (upside down?) on the road in front of the mosque, while what looks to be a garden of flowers and trees grows on the left side of the rug. The borders feature the familiar 'S' shape. The design of this rug and the depiction of the Herat Mosque has been used in designs before and since Taliban rule, although this rug is more abstract.

This rug is posted for the first time for sale in 2021, for the loss of Nigel Lendon created an urgency to pair down Warrug's collected rugs.

Chocolate Brown Vegetable Dye War Rug
ID# 1003, 101 x 145 cm , Chocolate Brown Vegetable Dye War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in excellent condition and made with the finest of wools from Ghanzi, Afghanistan. The wool is spun entirely by hand and the dyes used to create these rich, lustrous colors are all natural, and indigenous to the area. Rarely do we ever see this gorgeous chocolate brown used, and it really makes this war rug unique, as it is not used as an accent color, but in the entire field. This fits well with the beautiful landscape of Afghanistan, rich in colors like greens and browns and reds. It is interesting that after the weavers voice was silenced by the Taliban, she emerges to tell her tale not in a covert, subtle way, but with the boldness that her story deserves after such oppression. This war rug leaves no doubt in the mind of the observer, as to what her life has been like, and what she now continues to endure..

Three Beluchi Medallion War Rug
ID# 911, 112 x 196 cm , Three Beluchi Medallion War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in excellent condition. This is a classic example of folk art at its finest. For centuries, the Baluch have woven the same three medallion pattern seen in this rug. Inside the medallions are poppies. The traditions of the rich blue color, the multiple, alternating sized borders, and the medallions have been passed through time from generation to generation. This nomadic Baluchi weaver didn't stop there, however. She dated this rug by images she sees on a daily basis, and thereby changed a pattern used and seen for centuries. Throughout this war rug, there are images of helicopters and tanks. They are stylized and cleverly juxtaposed with the traditional elements of their rug weaving designs. An example of this unique way of juxtaposition can be observed with a traditional motif seen in rugs, a comb used in the weaving process, incorporated into the tail of the stylized helicopter. A guaranteed conversation starter, this war rug is perfect for a home or office..

Lion Border War Rug with Eight Tanks
ID# 909, 107 x 193 cm , Lion Border War Rug with Eight Tanks,
Description: The condition of this war rug is good This is a Beluchi war rug with exceptional images. Surrounding the entire rug is the traditional image of lions. These lions are used to symbolize strength and courage. The main field of the rug has rows of Soviet-era tanks and rifles. Interestingly, to protect the city of Kabul, the Afghans built, centuries ago, a tall wall surrounding the city in protection. This wall is the pride of all Afghans and is responsible for three defeats over the British. However, the Soviets were able to permeate the wall and entire the city of Kabul. To further take down the pride of the Afghans, the Soviets destroyed two lion sculptures that marked the entrance to the city.
The artist of this war rug almost was telling a story in the weaving of this rug. That the Soviet tanks permeated the center. Interesting, she drew the traditional Afghan symbolism of poppies inside the tanks, almost as if she is suggesting that that was what the Soviets truly desired. However, even with the conflicting images of the lions meaning strength and courage and the tanks representing force, the traditional symbol of the tree of life still manages to run down the center of this war rug. Proving, once again, that although they may be ravaged by war, life continues for the Afghan people.
This war rug is in good condition, with some very minor issues. There is some sarnach and some slightly irregular knotting not too uncommon in tribal folk art..

Brightly Colored Two Ewer Rug with Brightly Colored Tank and Helicopter Border
ID# 882, 119 x 216 cm , Brightly Colored Two Ewer Rug with Brightly Colored Tank and Helicopter Border,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. This artists work is spectacular; the rug is excellently knotted, the wool used is extremely lustrous, and the colors are phenomenal. Even the fringe is gorgeous. This is one of the finest examples of contemporary Afghan folk art. It is full of traditional motifs and symbols passed down through generations. Motifs such as hearts and poppies, symbols such as the two ewers representing cleanliness and rituals. Had the artist lived in peaceful times, she may have stopped there. Instead, she filled her art with images from her daily life. With things we can not imagine seeing, things generations before her never could have laid eyes upon. Images of tanks, helicopters, and rifles. Even in this war torn nation, weavers before her would have only occasionally seen swordsmen ride through her nomadic village. Certainly, the daily barrage of tanks and rifles became part of her story, and now that the Taliban is silenced, her voice can be heard..

Kalashnikovs with One Purple APC Small Red War Rug
ID# 606, 59 x 89 cm , Kalashnikovs with One Purple APC Small Red War Rug,
Description: This classic war rug is characterized by its blue selvedge and electric purple accents. A slightly darker red than the most red rugs, the dark browns and greens contrast nicely with the neon purples and oranges.

This rug would have a lot of brightly colored accents, however it "painted" on both the front and the back. Some clever person appears to have used black dye to mute the the bright colors. In rug terms, we call this painted. It looks better (to some) at a glance, but it hurts the value, imho, so it is priced accordingly..

Red Tanks War Rug
ID# 462, 119 x 213 cm , Red Tanks War Rug,
Description: This fabulous war rug was woven in 1993. The colors are stunning, to say the least. The overall composition is lovely. One of the nicest things about this war rug is the artists use of an intriguing, rare pattern. Located in the border found just outside the very inner part of the rug is a pattern made up of grenades and poppies. The use of the grenades in this form makes the imagery almost hidden in plain site. Another example of the artists clever use of pattern can be found in the text. Usually, the Farsi text in these types of war rugs say -tank-, however, she took Farsi letters and instead wove them as part of the overall pattern. The same letters, which do not translate or spell anything, can be found throughout the rug, used in much of the same way that the birds and flowers are used. Another thing we would be remiss not to point out, and never before seen in this type of war rug, are the black rockets on either side of the tanks. There are two ewers found at the top and bottom of this war rug. These ewers are used in ritualistic cleansing before prayer. Please note the very interesting and stylized helicopters along the outside border which are only found in this two ewer style of war rugs. Needless to say, the artist of this war rug was extremely talented in not only design, but color use as well..

Small Village Afghan War Rug
ID# 460, 87 x 142 cm , Small Village Afghan War Rug,
Description: This war rug was woven in 1997 in Herat, Afghanistan. It stems from an interesting tradition of Herati pictorial war rugs. An example of this can be seen on our collectors page, war rug I.D. number 7. This is made in the same style and tradition and incorporates similar images. Rugnumber 7 is loaned to museums and galleries throughout the world. The border of this rug has beautiful color. This border pattern is indicative of a particular group of rugs made outside Herat. Note the similarity to the main border of rug 7, as well as this rug #227, and #263
The main structure in this war rug found on the left is a mosque. In the mountains, on the right, is an anti-aircraft piece. Just to the left of that are two red and blue geometrical images. These represent the Mujahadeen hiding out in so-called pill boxes, where they dig out an area to safely protect themselves from detection as they fight. There is text written in Farsi throughout this war rug. This is a beautiful rug with outstanding colors and forms. Sure to be treasured and an interesting conversation starter, to boot.

Description: This incredible new war rug is in perfect condition. This war rug was made in the year 2000 to commemorate Afghanistan's liberation from the Soviets and to celebrate the Soviets exodus. Warrug.com selects only the very best to offer to our clients, and it is obvious what sets this war rug apart from the rest.
On the top of this war rug is a line of helicopters. Just below them there is a tank on the right and to the left of that tank is a remarkable depiction of a tank in three point perspective. There is another tank like this in the main map of Afghanistan. This is extremely rare and never before seen in these types of Soviet exodus war rugs. It truly illustrates the amazing talent of this artist. There is a battle scene depicted above the map involving fighter planes, as well as a helicopter being shot down within the borders of the map. There is text along the bottom in English saying that this carpet was made in Afghanistan. The text within all of the maps is in Farsi and reads -Afghanistan-..

Beautiful Soviet Exodus Yellow Map Afghan War Rug
ID# 456, 59 x 77 cm , Beautiful Soviet Exodus Yellow Map Afghan War Rug,
Description: This war rug was made in the year 2000 and is in perfect condition. This war rug commemorates the Soviet exodus. The bright red used in the map of Afghanistan provides a sharp contrast to the military colors also used throughout this rug.
This is an excellent example of tribal folk art. This traditional war rug pattern was most likely used as a practice tool by the inexperienced artist. Often, it is boring for a weaver to have large areas of only one color, so they fill in the space with Xes, thereby breaking up the monotony. The artist clearly practiced writing text in English and making curves and points by including the oh-so-rare-in-a-war-rug heart symbol. Typically, poppies are used by traditional artists in Afghanistan, and this weaver used many, probably to refine her technique in weaving them. The helicopters are childishly stylized, although the attempt at three point perspective in the tanks clearly shows that this weaver had a very good mentor. As far as folk art, there are few examples available as cherished as this war rug..

Two Rows of Tanks and Helicopters without Kalashnikovs Red Afghan War Rug
ID# 455, 99 x 160 cm , Two Rows of Tanks and Helicopters without Kalashnikovs Red Afghan War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. This is one of the very best designs we have seen in the Turkmen red war rugs. The composition and use of color is outstanding. We would be remiss to not point out the remarkable use of symmetry by the artist. The alignment of the weaponry is not only horizontal, but vertical as well. Just look at how the grenades are aligned down the center of the rug, and yet they are also used to crossword-like perfection in the tank-grenade- tank rows going across. The bullets are seen only in the helicopter rows, and even then the only time these are used to outline the bottom of the helicopter as well as the top is in the very center row. Even the bullet border has them all pointing inward. Very rarely do we see this type of symmetry, as these rugs usually are in a prayer rug format, with clear delineation of direction. Also, there is a unique and subtle use of the very traditional melding with the contemporary, even within war rug folk art. This rug was made in 2002, and there is the text of USSR on every helicopter, which is typical of soviet-era war rugs. However, a tradition of many of our US helicopter pilots is to have a face painted on the front of the helicopter to scare our enemies and support morale among our troops. There is a mouth woven onto each and every helicopter. A brilliant piece of art, to say the least..

Full Army Vegetal Dye Red Afghan War Rug
ID# 454, 76 x 94 cm , Full Army Vegetal Dye Red Afghan War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. This war rug was woven in Peshawar, Pakistan by an Afghan refugee, so it is understandable how this female artist knows and depicts so clearly the inner workings of a Kalashnikov rifle. Peshawar is increasingly becoming Taliban-esque, and the refugees are being forced to relive the nightmare that once ruled Afghanistan. Because of this, Peshawar is becoming known as the place for religious fundamentalists to go and have their firearms altered. This war rug is very relevant and telling of the times in which the artist lives. Many of the refugees are now leaving the camps and returning to Afghanistan, where they are less likely to come across these fundamentalists.
Also of note, is the remarkable use of colors in this rug. Just look at the medium-sized helicopter located just below the centered tank. It is almost as if the artist was depicting the helicopter as being camouflaged. This is a striking addition to war rug folk art..

Two Big Guns War Rug
ID# 453, 66 x 96 cm , Two Big Guns War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in very good condition. It has been through a special washing process in Pakistan, and the colors will only get more beautiful with time as the wool oxidizes. The composition is quite good in this war rug. The artists use of the space between the two Kalashnikovs is done with exceptional precision, allowing for varying and interesting weaponry. The multiple colors in the bullet border are echoed in the planes, making for an almost pixilated appearance and a wonderful contemporary twist..

Four Helicopter on Top Row Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug
ID# 452, 63 x 77 cm , Four Helicopter on Top Row Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. This rug, though having the date of 1989, was made in 2002 and commemorates the year of the Soviet exodus. The writing is a beautiful addition to this war rug. The artist proudly recalls the feeling of the times and has written that the forces of USSR is coming out from Afghanistan. Also, she displays her wonderful understanding of the English language by naming various objects such as the Afghanistan map, tanks and rocket, and calls hand grenades hand bombs. For the artists homeland, she includes the blessing of long life among the depicted explosions within Afghanistan..

Cerulean Blue Map Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug
ID# 426, 63 x 81 cm , Cerulean Blue Map Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug,
Description: This new war rug, woven in 2002, is in excellent condition with some minor bleeding that is typical in all tribal war rugs. It is quite rare that this shade of blue is ever used in this type of rug commemorating the 1989 Soviet exodus. This blue provides a striking background to the imagery of tanks, planes, helicopters, and explosions. The two different grenades right next to each other is a very nice touch and it, unfortunately, speaks of a life where it is not uncommon that a woman can accurately draw different types of hand grenades..

Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug
ID# 425, 66 x 79 cm , Soviet Exodus Yellow Map War Rug,
Description: This new war rug, woven in 2002, is in perfect condition. The text in Farsi reads that The Army of the Soviets are Leaving Afghanistan, commemorating the 1989 Soviet exodus. The use of many different colors like the pale blue and grey along side the militaristic shades of green and brown is refreshing. The border is a traditional Afghan border of poppies. The addition of the tanks being bombed as they return home is a nice editorial by the artist..

Three Fighter Jet War Rug with Tora Bora and Flag Banner PSYOP Motifs
ID# 423, 56 x 79 cm , Three Fighter Jet War Rug with Tora Bora and Flag Banner PSYOP Motifs,
Description: This new war rug is in excellent condition with only some minor bleeding that is common in this type of tribal folk art. The text is incredibly simple in language and yet astonishingly profound in meaning. The phrase beneath the nation-building banner of peace reads to the terrorists Terrors, the freedom of Afghanistan our local leader has come with American Forces. Not commonly seen in Tora Bora war rugs is the ethnicity of the artist written along side of the text reading Made in Afghanistan Turkmen. The labeling of all the countries that share a border with Afghanistan is nice, as well as the Tora Bora mountain range. Of note is the particular attention this artist paid to the beautiful emblem in the flag of Afghanistan..

To Create Freedom in Afghanistan - Flag Banner War Rug - Sherberghan
ID# 422, 56 x 79 cm , To Create Freedom in Afghanistan - Flag Banner War Rug - Sherberghan,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. This is a fascinating piece of folk art that not only couples a traditional art form, such as weaving, with contemporary images, tanks versus flowers, but also adds the traditional to the contemporary in terms of war rugs in particular. The image of the American and Afghan flags united by a dove carrying an olive sprig came directly from leaflets dropped on Afghanistan by our Special Forces, as well as the images of the pick-up trucks found inside the map. However, the trucks are usually also found in complete depictions on the leaflets, that is to say, next to the Tora Bora mountain range. The artist of this war rug took the traditional use of the Afghan map containing helicopters, tanks, and planes as well as the blessing for a long life to Afghanistan from the Soviet-era war rugs and added the contemporary image of the trucks to the scene. Where the term USA 2002 now stands, it once read USSR 1989. This war rug almost stands as a testimony to the history of Afghanistan starting from the Bolshevik years and ending in the 21st century..

World Trade Center
ID# 396, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center,
Description: The condition of this Afghan war rug is new. We offer a variety of these war rugs at many different prices, depending on the quality of the wool and the weavers' drawings. The burgundy color on the right sides of the towers is particularly nice. This rug is thinner and stiffer than most of this type.
The drawing is simple with literate text describing which plane hit first and second. This shows an eerie understanding by the weaver of what those of us who witnessed that horrible day (specifically from our office windows) will continually be haunted by. There are no people falling out of this one, and the drawing is not as graphic as most 9/11 war rugs. This would be a good rug for someone who likes the idea of the commemoration, but has a difficult time with some of the other World Trade Center war rugs. The symbolism of peace with the two flags and the white dove holding an olive branch is nice..

No Flag Banner World Trade Center War Rug with Green Outline of Afghan Map
ID# 385, 66 x 84 cm , No Flag Banner World Trade Center War Rug with Green Outline of Afghan Map,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is perfect. This is an excellent design since the 9/11 war rugs with the banner of peace across the middle are more common, those without the banner, such as this one, is much more sought after and thereby valuable. The rareness of these is remarkable, and warrug.com is privileged to offer such a fine example. Our company will flip through piles of war rugs and pull out only the best quality available to offer to our customers.
This war rug is drawn quite well by the weaver. Though the flames and people falling are quite graphic, it is true to the day. There is an outline of Afghanistan in the background and this seems to represent the immediate hunt for Al Qaeda with the missile launching and the aircraft carrier lined with jets. It is interesting to note that the Afghan refugee woman who weaved this rug appears to connect the two events with great alacrity. The use of military colors throughout this war rug is a clever touch.
There is some minor bleeding of dark into light colors which is common in these types of new war rugs..

World Trade Center War Rug with Brown Towers and People Falling
ID# 384, 61 x 79 cm , World Trade Center War Rug with Brown Towers and People Falling,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. This is a fascinating example of a World Trade Center war rug without a banner of peace. Very rarely do we see four commercial airplanes, and the staff at warrug.com all seem to agree that this must represent the other planes that crashed on September 11th. It is interesting to note that never before have we seen a rug of this type contain the text, - bank - , although it is not clear that this is what this word actually is. This text is left for interpretation with a myriad of meanings. The American flags are particularly well drawn, as is the unusual way in which the fire is represented.
There is some minor bleeding of dark into light colors which is common in these types of new war rugs..

World Trade Center War Rug with PSYOPS Flag Banner
ID# 383, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center War Rug with PSYOPS Flag Banner,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. The entire staff at warrug.com have agreed that this is one of the best 9/11 war rugs that we have seen. The colors are absolutely outstanding with a variety not commonly seen ever before. An example of this is in the flames. The use of red, blue, yellow, black, and gold shows unparalleled attention to detail by the weaver. The drawing in this war rug is on a completely different level. The flags with the dove is extremely well drawn, with the American flag and the emblem in the center of the Afghani flag crystal clear. This is an impressive piece and should be passed on through generations.
There is some minor bleeding of dark into light colors which is common in these types of new war rugs..

World Trade Center War Rug
ID# 381, 59 x 79 cm , World Trade Center War Rug,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. This is an incredible piece of folk art that accurately speaks of the times in which we live. The text along the top gives the date of the event and the reason for the resulting bombing of Afghanistan by the US reading,- The Terrors were in Afghanistan-. This is interesting, because shortly after the destruction in the US, our Special Forces in Psychological Operations began dropping leaflets in Afghanistan by the million. The leaflets explained, by using text and imagery of the burning towers, and a map of Afghanistan with missiles launching, the events that had and would unfold and the reasons behind this. They soon launched what is known as nation-building images of our two flags united, telling the people of Afghanistan that we were there for a specific reason and would help them, letting them know that our governments were united in this cause..

World Trade Center with Orange USA Between Towers
ID# 379, 61 x 79 cm , World Trade Center with Orange USA Between Towers,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. The use of militaristic colors gives this rug a sharp contemporary twist on traditional war rug weaving. We think of war rugs as being the typical Baluch red or blue, or of having subtle imagery if not of those types. There is no confusion as to the theme or resulting consequence of September 11th. Although we see the burning towers and people falling, the artist also clearly shows the American aircraft carrier and missile launching with a map of Afghanistan in the background. The nation building image of the American flag united with the Afghani flag by a dove carrying an olive sprig gives a nice focal point to the surrounding atrocities..

World Trade Center War Rug with Dark Colors
ID# 377, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center War Rug with Dark Colors,
Description: This is the most densely knotted of these rugs we have seen. They are usually around 100 knots per inch, but this one is 210!
The colors of this rug are particularly nice also. The palate is dark, the colors are muted. The color sits well in the wool as well..

Red War Rug with Green and Tan RPG, Hand Grenades and Land Mines
ID# 374, 107 x 157 cm , Red War Rug with Green and Tan RPG, Hand Grenades and Land Mines,
Description: The condition of this war rug is excellent.
This pattern is one of the most attractive patterns used in red rugs. The large RPG's running down the middle balance the largeness of the AK-47s and provide a symmetry to the whole design.
The color of this rug is a burgundy. The selvedge is a beautiful red color.
The dagger shaped motifs are a form of land mine. They are like a hand grenade on a stick. The stick is mounted in the ground and a trip wire is attached to the top of the grenade part. When the wire is pulled the grenade part explodes, above ground, wreaking terrible damage to anyone around. Simple and brutal.
The octagonal forms with three lines running vertically through the middle is some kind of mine or improvised explosive device one sees occasionally on war rugs. If you know what it is specifically, please contact us..

Washed Red Rug with Three Helicopters on Top and Six Grenades on Bottom
ID# 373, 69 x 91 cm , Washed Red Rug with Three Helicopters on Top and Six Grenades on Bottom,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. This is an Afghan war rug that was washed using a special technique in Pakistan before it was shipped to us. It has a nice abrash to it. The staff at warrug.com all agree that the pattern seen in this war rug is exceptional. The continuity of the mixed geometric colors used in the helicopters, hand grenades, and along the bullet border is lovely. The tribal aspect of small mistake, clearly shows the beautiful juxtaposition and the brilliant traditional appeal of nomadic, tribal weaving versus the perfection of regular Persian city carpets..

Red Rug Small Runner
ID# 372, 61 x 170 cm , Red Rug Small Runner,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The colors are nicely militaristic using tan, olive and brown as well as the typical red commonly seen in Baluch war rugs. The composition is rather interesting, as the layout has only the AK-47s in mirror image. All the other vehicles and weaponry, including the bullet border, are facing in the same direction. This almost lends one to think that it could also double as a prayer rug if need be..

Red Rug with Butterflies
ID# 371, 101 x 178 cm , Red Rug with Butterflies,
Description: This slightly older rug is in very good condition, but has small area of low pile. Excellent design, good drawing. Butterflies are a nice touch..

Red War Rug with Small Emerald Green Tanks
ID# 370, 94 x 152 cm , Red War Rug with Small Emerald Green Tanks,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The colors used in this war rug are absolutely wonderful. Great attention by the weaver has been given to alternating colors, seen throughout this rug in the bullets and along the helicopter. This rug has very nice, simple and stylized emerald green tanks. The drawing of these is very attractive and they are a classic motif on these red war rugs. Not commonly seen, but highly sought after, are the bullets seen in the magazines of the rifles and the internal mechanisms used to fire the gun. This is interesting partly because this war rug came out of one of the Afghan refugee camps located in Peshawar. How an Afghani weaver could know the internal workings of a rifle is not much of a puzzle given the refugees locale. In this north-western Pakistani region, there are many changes occurring right now. Many of the Pashtuns there, (the weavers of our rugs are Turkmen) are creating a Taliban-sequel existence. Interestingly, the changes we are seeing in the war rugs using more internal diagrams of the ammunitions could be directly related to the camps proximity to the shops in Pakistan that make and alter rifles..

Red Rug with a lot of Text and Airplane Border
ID# 369, 99 x 155 cm , Red Rug with a lot of Text and Airplane Border,
Description: The condition of this war rug is new and perfect. This war rug is a classic example of this type of rug.
The field is nicely filled in with large helicopters with tail rotors intact and if you look closely, you will see the inclusion of two handguns, each located on either ends of this rug. All of the planes found point in one direction, and this rug could be used as a prayer rug as well, with the only two planes located in the main field found in the typical hand positions.
A wonderful use of a variety of colors compliment the interesting dichotomy of war and prayer. A great rug for the experienced collector and beginner alike, sure to be a point of interest for discussion in any home or office..

Red Rug with Trucks, RPG and Plane Dropped Land Mines
ID# 368, 104 x 162 cm , Red Rug with Trucks, RPG and Plane Dropped Land Mines,
Description: This war rug is an excellent example of this type of rug. The condition is new. The drawing is spare and the images are diverse. The colors are simple and bold.
Michael Luongo, a New York City journalist who recently visited Afghanistan, brought back an interesting report from the Omar Mine Museum near Kabul. He described a land mine which the Soviets would drop from planes at night, so when the Afghans woke up they would be stranded in their houses, and walking outside would be very treacherous. This type of mine is shown in this rug. It is shown clearly in the sixth photograph down the page. They were bright colors and had a plastic look. Thanks to Michael Luongo for his description and photographs..

Red Rug with Little Plants
ID# 365, 99 x 162 cm , Red Rug with Little Plants,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. This war rug has beautiful uses of color with wonderful drawings. The composition of the designs is excellent. The field is densely laid out with images. Often it is boring for a weaver to go long stretches of weaving one solid color, so they will often fill in the area with little Xes. The weaver of this rug, however, fills in the field with a variety of interesting images, including smaller aircraft and munitions with the occasional small plant as an excellent accent..

Soviet Hand Rug with Red Water Buffalo and Man Leading Two Camels
ID# 364, 96 x 152 cm , Soviet Hand Rug with Red Water Buffalo and Man Leading Two Camels,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This is a wonderful example of an Afghani pictorial war rug. The hand represents the Soviet-puppet government and its invasion of Afghanistan. The images of the women and children seeking refuge is beautifully depicted and accurately shows all the faces of war, from the tanks and fighter jets displaying USSR logos, to the mujahadeen fighting Najibullah with the red hammer and sickle painted on his forehead, to the families being forced to leave and few to return, some with nothing, others with only their animals. The child riding a donkey and the inclusion of a never-before-seen red water buffalo makes the drawing on this war rug incredible, to say the least. Its colors and images are provoking and honest and the Farsi text is dramatic. This war rug is a remarkably old way of telling a story..

There are images of AK-74s along the sides and wonderful drawings of a battery of anti-aircraft weapons. The rocket launchers are depicted in the likes of childhood toys. The use of colors in the images throughout this war rug is absolutely wonderful with innocence juxtaposed with the harsh reality of military armaments. The bullets along the border continue this color theme..

ID# 355, 109 x 193 cm , Floral Medallion with Checkered colors Zakini Baluch War Rug with Two Helicopters,
Description: This older rug is in good condition. There are two caveats to this. First, the color of the face of the rug has changed. On the back the field color is deep blue, but on the front is has faded to a deep charcoal blue. Secondly, it has a repair that is roughly 3x4 inches. The repair is well done.
This is a rare pattern. The colors are very nice. It is desirable how the two helicopters are hidden in the design.
Nice rug.

Kabul Kazak - War Against Terrorism
ID# 352, 109 x 122 cm , Kabul Kazak - War Against Terrorism,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. It is made with the finest wool in all of Afghanistan, called Ghazni wool from the region from which it hails. The wool is entirely spun by hand. This war rug has excellent color and much thicker pile than most Kazak rugs which tend to have very short pile.
We at warrug.com are proud to introduce to our customers the very first of this type of war rug anyone here has ever seen. These rugs just arrived from weavers in Kabul, Afghanistan. The staff at warrug.com have begged our boss to let us keep one here in the office, to no avail. In fact, those in customer service have all agreed unanimously that this new type of war rug is our absolute favorite war rug EVER!
First of all, the wool and colors are simply luscious. This rug has the most unusual war images ever seen. Just look at the inclusion of an ATV and the amazing predator drone flying over the mountains of Afghanistan. This weaver was unbelievably talented with her drawings of the Blackhawk helicopter and accurate depiction of our tanks. The text on top reads - War against Terror - and the text along the bottom reads -Made in Kabul Afghanistan -. Other text located throughout this incredible Afghan war rug reads - FDNY - WTC - PENTAGON - NYPD - , just to name a few.
This war rug really brings a true contemporary twist into the world of traditional Afghan Kazak rugs, which were so popular in American homes during the end of the last century..

ID# 320, 91 x 152 cm , sold to Melissa and Paul,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. This is made with Ghanzi wool, the finest wool in Afghanistan and completely hand-spun. This is a pictorial Afghani war rug depicting the Soviet-puppet government during their invasion. The image of the hand dripping blood and reaching into the depths of Afghanistan is beautifully done as the hand turns subtly into the hammer and sickle. Some of the finer points of this rug, besides its super quality wool, would be the rug's nice colors and its Farsi text..

Camel Medallion Herati Afghan War Rug with Tank Border
ID# 318, 104 x 183 cm , Camel Medallion Herati Afghan War Rug with Tank Border,
Description: This newish rug is in very good condition. This is an excellent rug. The wool is soft, fine and dense. It is well knotted. It has a most pleasurable sensation underfoot. The sheen is silky and lustrous. It represents the best kind of Baluchi rug from western Afghanistan.
The pattern of this rug is unique and does not fit into any style. The tank border is reminiscent of ""Two Ewer"" rugs or ""Golden Border"" rugs, but the we have never seen this kind of medallion in any Afghan Baluchi rug, war or otherwise.
The main camel medallion color is undyed wool, probably camel wool. The smaller square medallions are very unique, and the brown outer portion is again undyed wool. The colors, from the camel to the green centers are beautifully keyed together.
The different sized motifs throughout the rug make a strong composition. The large motifs, the camel medallions, contrast well with the small motifs in the field and the medium sized tank motifs on the border.
Simply, a great rug..

White Baluchi Afghan War Rug with Blue Medallions, Tanks, Trucks and Animals
ID# 317, 112 x 190 cm , White Baluchi Afghan War Rug with Blue Medallions, Tanks, Trucks and Animals,
Description: This newish Afghan war rug is good. The pile is full and the wool is very nice, and the white wool is looks to be hand spun. The colors go well together. The white offsets the blue particularly well. The best thing about this rug is the images. The childishly drawn trucks at the top and the bottom are really great. The tanks are stylized, and the guns are pointed up in retreat. The animals and the urns and the dotted lines are the best, they accent the war motifs and locate them in a more traditional environment.
This rug has a flaw one finds in some tribal rugs, which is that some weft threads are pulled too tight and the rug puckers a bit and does not lay perfectly flat.

Bomber, Helicopter, Tank War Rug with Two Non-Weapon Border
ID# 316, 114 x 183 cm , Bomber, Helicopter, Tank War Rug with Two Non-Weapon Border,
Description: The condition of this somewhat older rug is excellent. Gauging the age of this rug is difficult. On the one hand the condition is very good and the back is not very burnished (older rugs get shiny on the back, and extraneous fuzz from the pile wool gets worn off). On the other hand the pile shows some wear, but still is full pile, and the sheen is very developed and warm. Also the bottom fringe looks like it has been reduced, where some of the kilim was damaged and the wefts removed.
This style of rug was plentiful about 5 years ago, but the structure was different than this rug. The pile was very thick an pointed straight up, the wool was dry and the rugs were noticeably dusty. This rug has thin pile that lays more flat than straight up and down, and it is not dusty at all. The rugs five years ago were new production.
This design is one that people to not recognize immediately as a war rug. At the flea market people would look at them for a minute, then say, ""Oh my! Those are tanks!""
The colors are classic Baluch from western Afghanistan, dark with a touch of white for accent and the dominant color is dark blue..

Red Afghan War Rug with Green Helicopters
ID# 315, 99 x 155 cm , Red Afghan War Rug with Green Helicopters,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in excellent condition. The first rug we ever bought was one of this pattern. Rug 315 has good drawing, meaning the overall layout and composition work well together. The helicopters and tanks are nicely laid out down the middle of the field and the AK-47's are accurately drawn and point in the same direction. Some people have wondered if the AK's pointing in the same direction mean it is a prayer rug, this is possible. The airplane border on this rug is simple and attractive. The best thing about this rug though is the color. The red if bright and vivid and the red contrasts the other colors very well.
This type of rug is essentially a Bokara rug with the guls replaced by weapons.
Another nice feature of this rug is the explosions coming out of the cannons on the tank..

Red Pakistan War Rug with Hand Guns
ID# 314, 101 x 160 cm , Red Pakistan War Rug with Hand Guns,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in excellent condition. This is a perfect example of this type. The wool is quite good and after it was woven in Afghanistan, it was sent to Pakistan to receive a special wash that softens the wool and ever-so-slightly mutes its colors. This gives this war rug a lovely abrash.
The weapons are classically drawn, suggesting that this weaver has been weaving war rugs since the original Soviet invasion. The helicopters are brilliantly done in the style of tradition (the seats seen in profile inside the helicopter) meeting the contemporary (the blades and the tail rotor). The hand grenades and the bullet border is another example of traditional war rug images, but the hand guns are contemporary and used throughout Afghanistan by American Special Forces in a very unconventional, new type of war as they move through the mountains on a hunt for Osama bin Laden..

ID# 312, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center September 11 Afghan War Rug - Grey Towers,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is extremely well knotted and truly stands out as such. The colors are exceptional in this rug and are used very nicely in the flags as well as the dove. The helicopter is nice in this war rug as well. The tower on the left is haunting while interesting at the same time because on the very top rear it is drawn with the steel melting and peeling back..

The Twin Towers and the air craft carrier are almost drawn in 3-D fashion, as is the fire coming out of the missile fired in the lower right. Grey H-46 Sea Knight (thanks Bruce) Helicopter Afghan War Rug
ID# 309, 66 x 79 cm , Grey H-46 Sea Knight (thanks Bruce) Helicopter Afghan War Rug,
Description: Thanks to reader, Bruce, for a correction. He informed us that the we have misidentified a H-46 Sea Knight as a CH-47 Chinook. He points out that the Sea Knight only has three wheels and that the windows are different.
This new Afghan war rug is in perfect condition. This rug is particularly thick with dense and strong wool. It will be very hard wearing.
This rug has an all grey Chinook. The drawing of the helicopter is a playful and animated.
This is the oldest of the Chinook rugs we have seen, it is dated 2001
This rug is one of a small number of rugs in the ""Chinook Helicopter"" sub-group of the ""Rout of Terrorism"" Afghan war rugs. The Chinook style features many of the same image as the rest of the ""Rout of terrorism"" rugs, like the Afghan map with a scene of the Tora Bora battle inside, variety of flags and weapons, names of the surrounding countries, as well as English or Farsi text. This particular sub-style shows a simply but elegantly drawn US Chinook helicopter.
Please note the red image to the right of the tail of the Chinook, it looks like a chess rook. Interesting..

Sea Knight with Dragon's Teeth Afghan War Rug with US and Afghan Flags over Tora Bora
ID# 308, 61 x 79 cm , Sea Knight with Dragon's Teeth Afghan War Rug with US and Afghan Flags over Tora Bora,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in perfect condition.
This rug has a camouflaged Chinook with a grey front. The drawing of the helicopter has a playful anthropomorphic quality.
The union of the Afghans and Americans is depicted by the two countries flags joined in the sky above the Tora Bora mountains.
This rug features a armament not often seen in war rugs: Dragon's teeth anti tank mine. Several years ago an Air Force family was purchasing a rug from us and gave us some assistance deciphering this rug. The retired airman said the jagged things running horizontally in several places across this rug are ""Dragon's Teeth"" anti tank mines. In this rug, #308, the object running vertically along the border in the top left appears to be the same weapon.
This is one of the first rugs we have seen dated 2003..

Afghan War Rug with Scattered Flags and Tora Bora Map in light colors saying -Route of Terrorishm -
ID# 304, 66 x 79 cm , Afghan War Rug with Scattered Flags and Tora Bora Map in light colors saying -Route of Terrorishm -,
Description: This new rug is in very good condition. This rug features the unusual text ""AMERICAN ARMY"" as well as ""Rout of terrorism with the help of America and Britian."" The weavers of this war rug lived for years in western Pakistan in refugee camps, and after the fall of the Taliban regime at the US' hands, were able to return to their native homes in northern Afghanistan. They had been weaving the Soviet story war rugs in the same format and technique in Pakistan, and brought this style with them back to Afghanistan where they recreated the pattern with American weapons and war on terrorism motifs.
An unusual feature of this particular rug is the light colors inside the map of Afghanistan where the Tora Bora battle, Operation Anaconda, is depicted.
This particular rug is part of the ""Scattered Flags"" sub style of these small format yellow map rugs. The vast majority of these rugs feature a banner along the top with the American and Afghan flags, as well as sometimes the British Flag. The ""Scattered Flags"" design give the rug a more all over look..

F-16 Afghan Map War Rug with Scattered Flags and Three Hearts in Corner
ID# 303, 61 x 79 cm , F-16 Afghan Map War Rug with Scattered Flags and Three Hearts in Corner,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in perfect condition. Out of the many Tora Bora map rugs we have seen at warrug.com, this is one of our favorites. The weaver of this war rug is exceptionally talented. The images depicted are strong and powerful, as she has weaved them with unparalleled accuracy. An example of this is her use of colors to demonstrate different parts of an object that she sees. Instead of an outline of a pickup truck, she uses multiple dyed yarns to showcase the wheels, hubs, windows, and even a person in the cab of the vehicles. A small, but interesting point is the weavers naming of what she has drawn with absolute clarity. She has taken the time to expertly label the ""air plane"", ""rocket"", and ""cars"".
Another interesting point is the inclusion of so many different flags, including Pakistan's. Not only does the weaver label the locals of the countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan, she also points out the border of Pakistan, of which we have never seen before. This is a crucial element in the War on Terror, since the US has often speculated that Osama bin Laden and his followers have been going back and forth between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many of these types of war rugs have all of the surrounding countries listed, but not this particular rug. It only points out Afghanistan and Pakistan and the border between them, with a nod to the original invasion by the soviets with naming Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Almost suggesting what our boys over there have known all along. That the terrorists we are looking for and its war is not just in Afghanistan, but they have been busy searching them out, cave by cave, in Afghanistan, along the border, and into Pakistan.
Lastly, although this is only theorized by the staff of warrug.com, is the meaning of a small symbol of a heart. We have seen a heart before, actually, on rug # 277, and it stuck out as odd then. However, we have known that many weavers add a sort of 'signature' on their rugs. Sometimes, it is an actual name, other times, it is an ambiguous marker. Unfortunately, even we are sure many 'signatures' have gotten by us, although we spend a lot of time inspecting each and every war rug. There are three hearts located on the bottom right of this rug. It is in a distinct pattern. We have seen a similar symbol, of the same size, color, and area in rug #277. That war rug was clearly not woven by the weaver of this rug, and there is a variation of the 'signature', Our guess is that perhaps the weaver of this rug either mentored the weaver of #227, was in the same family, or maybe in the same refugee camps. Either way, the weaver of #277 clearly tried to emulate this weaver. That is a wonderful example of an art being passed down through generations..

Scattered Flags Sub style of F-16 Map Rug with Three F-16s in formation
ID# 302, 63 x 77 cm , Scattered Flags Sub style of F-16 Map Rug with Three F-16s in formation,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. There is some abrash in the field color as well as the usual minimal light bleeding of dark into light colors. The depiction of the F-16 Fighter Jets in formation is rare. The red images below the jets appear to be bombs being dropped in the war on terror. This Tora Bora rug with caves in the mountains also has drawings showing multiple people in the cabs of the pickup trucks.
The colors are nicely used in this war rug, as is the text ""for brinking peace in Afghanistan your local leader became union with American army""..

Afghan Map Rug with Compass but without Weapons - in Farsi
ID# 299, 61 x 77 cm , Afghan Map Rug with Compass but without Weapons - in Farsi,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan rug is excellent. By all technical means, this has no commonly known ""war"" images of weapons. However, we feel they are important art forms to be included in a war rug collection. This is because these rugs are derived from war rugs, and also because many maps were first charted for reasons either for war, or as a result of war. Territories and borders are often the only, and oldest, reasons for war.
This map rug showcases a compass, flag of Afghanistan, and a map with the Provinces written in Farsi. Also in Farsi are the names of the surrounding countries. In fact, the only text written in English is ""Made in Afghanistan"" and ""2002"". Please allow us to point out the flowers in the corners of the rug.
There is some minimal, typical bleeding of dark into light colors..

The colors used are wonderfully vivid and the two shades of blue used next to each other are particularly nice.
By all technical means, this has no commonly known ""war"" images of weapons. However, we feel they are important art forms to be included in a war rug collection. This is because these rugs are derived from war rugs, and also because many maps were first charted for reasons either for war, or as a result of war. ID# 295, 61 x 81 cm , Abstracted World Trade Center Afghan War Rug with Yellow Map of Afghanistan,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. There is, however, some of the usual minimal bleeding of dark into light colors.
The images depicted in this war rug are fascinating. You have the planes driven by the terrorists drawn like missiles going into the World Trade Center in the US with the text saying 'September 11th the attack on America in New York by terrorist' coupled with the images of the United States' attack on terrorists and the Taliban in Afghanistan with missiles being dropped by our planes into the Tora Bora region with the text 'rout of terrorism with help of America and Britain'. The drawing of the American flag is done exceptionally well..

These ""Route of Terrorism"" rugs are very finely knotted and this war rug is no exception.
This rug has a minor problem with the clipping of the pile. Just above the large F-16 the text is blurred by this problem.
The layout of the flags is particularly nice in this rug, as are the light colors.

F-16 Afghan War Rug with US / Afghan / UK Flag Banner
ID# 292, 63 x 81 cm , F-16 Afghan War Rug with US / Afghan / UK Flag Banner,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in excellent condition. This rug features a three country flag banner at the top. Most rugs like this feature only the US and Afghan flags, but this one features Britain too.
The text on this Afghan war rug is unusual, it seems to say something about making peace in union with the USA army. The rocket above the F-16 is nicely drawn.
There is some abrash in the red color inside the map of Afghanistan. The top is a brighter red than the lower rust color. Also, there is minor bleeding around the bottom border..

Scattered Flags, Route of Terrorism Tora Bora Style Afghan War Rug
ID# 290, 61 x 84 cm , Scattered Flags, Route of Terrorism Tora Bora Style Afghan War Rug ,

The wool singles used to knot the pile are thicker gauge which give the rug a more pixilated look. This rug is extremely dense and the handle is very firm. This is an extremely hard wearing rug.
This rug has a bit of unusual text. On the left side towards the bottom it says ""AMERICAN ARMY"". It is worth noting that the people who wove rugs like this in refugee camps in Pakistan during most of the eighties and nineties returned to their native homes in Afghanistan after the AMERICAN ARMY et al took out the Taliban..

Abstract WTC 9-11 Afghan War Rug #3
ID# 289, 61 x 79 cm , Abstract WTC 9-11 Afghan War Rug #3,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. This type of rug is a different take on the World Trade Center Afghan war rug. The first rug of this type we saw was this rug. We thought it was an anomaly but we recently discovered several more. They are very interesting. The simplified approach to the drawing of the twin towers to moderates the tone of the rug, making it less dramatic. Not to say that the tail of a plane sticking out of the building doesn't bring back memories.
This rug has different text than most World Trade Center rugs. This rug mentions New York by name, and also has the ""Rout of Terrorism"" text.
This style of rug, with the Soviet story not WTC motifs, was woven in Peshawar before the fall of the Taliban. After the US toppled the Taliban regime these weavers returned to their native homes in Afghanistan and began weaving these rugs..

Transitional Soviet Afghan War / War on Terrorism Rug
ID# 287, 59 x 79 cm , Transitional Soviet Afghan War / War on Terrorism Rug,
Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is perfect. It is densely knotted with good quality wool.
This is the original pattern of the yellow war rug. It features the Soviet / Afghan war story. It depicts the Soviet forces retreating from whence they came via Uzbekistan. This kind of rug features Soviet APCs and Helicopters under attack and on fire. This particular rug is a transitional piece, showing the Soviet withdrawal, but also the American flag joined with an Afghan flag. The US / Afghan flags are seen in the later ""Rout of terrorism"" rug, so this rug is a very recent example of the Soviet story map rug. Before the fall of the Taliban these rugs were made in western Pakistan, but they are now woven in northern Afghanistan, the traditional home of these Turkman weavers. The main production centers are Mazar I'Sharif and Sherberghan..

All Yellow Soviet Story Afghan War Rug

Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. It is densely woven with strong wool.
This rug is an example of the Soviet story sub style of the small Afghan map war rugs. This rug is a transitional piece between the Soviet story rugs and the ""War on Terrorism"" rugs. This is clear from the oxymoronic text saying ""USSR 2002"". Funny.
The Farsi text on the top of this rug says 'The army of the Soviets is leaving Afghanistan"".
This style of rug has been fairly plentiful for the last couple of years, and warrug.com searches for unusual and atypical examples of this kind of rug. One of the unusual features of this rug is that the map of Afghanistan is the same color as the field. This gives the rug a more unified composition, and the pattern more of an ""all over"" look. The war motifs in this rug are nicely arranged throughout the field. It is particularly attractive.
Until the US eliminated the Taliban regime, this style of rug was woven by refugees in Pakistan. After we took out the Taliban these weavers were able to return to their native homes and produce these rugs around Mazar I'Sharif and Sherberghan..

Description: The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. It is densely woven with strong wool.
The Farsi text on the top of this rug makes it extremely rare, to the point this is the only one we have seen. The wool is Ghazni, which the best wool available in all of Afghanistan. It is completely spun by hand. This war rug is extremely well-knotted with fabulous use of color giving this rug gorgeous luster rarely seen in new rugs. Its color comes from all natural dyes and the quality of the pile is top notch, as is its wool foundation.
The different colors of the rifles is a wonderful touch. The weaver certainly had an artistic flair and expressed herself well..

All Over Jets w/ Floral Border
ID# 264, 112 x 193 cm , All Over Jets w/ Floral Border,
Description: This war rug is in good condition. It has a lovely, full pile. A common occurrence in tribal Baluch folk art, there is some minor bleeding in light shades in a few places. This is a wonderful design in which it cannot fit under the category of subtle because the images of the fighter jets and abstract cars are obvious, however, it could definitely be thought of as hiding in plain sight. This is the type of design that you could have in your home or office in which the same people could see it on a daily basis, yet never really look at it. Quite a conversation starter as you point out the war images so expertly hidden by the artist.

Small Herati Landscape War Rug
ID# 263, 84 x 140 cm , Small Herati Landscape War Rug,
Description: This is an older war rug in excellent condition. This rug has a beautiful sheen on the wool. The use of very nice colors in addition to the border's natural wool can be seen in various colors throughout. This war rug is wonderfully drawn and the weaver was quite the artisan. There is also the wonderful illegible text on this war rug that is seen consistently in older soviet-era war rugs..

Small Soviet Hand Afghan War Rug with English Text
ID# 259, 66 x 91 cm , Small Soviet Hand Afghan War Rug with English Text,
Description: This new Afghan war rug is in good condition. It is densely knotted with some undyed wool. The bullet border is nice.
This rug depicts the story of the Soviet puppet government headed by Najibullah, the large human figure with the hammer and sickle on his forehead. He is held by the Soviet hand reaching down through Uzbekistan..

Small Pictorial #6
ID# 227, 81 x 142 cm , Small Pictorial #6,
Description: The condition of this older pictorial rug is very good with one caveat: there is a two inch by 1.5 inch section on the top near the fringe with moth damage. The wool is excellent and the design a classic. The image is an armored column rolling through the streets of a town, probably the old city of Herat. There is foliage and a chicken in the foreground, then a road with abstracted armor, then a city scene with a mosque. Behind the city are mountains with anti aircraft positions, and above the mountains is the sky with airplanes..

Small Soviet Hand Rug 2
ID# 226, 69 x 104 cm , Small Soviet Hand Rug 2,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This is a pictorial Afghani war rug depicting the Soviet-puppet government during their invasion. The image of the hand reaching into the depths of Afghanistan onto the Soviet leader is beautifully done as the top right of the hand turns subtly into the hammer and sickle..

Small Washed Red Rug 3
ID# 225, 63 x 79 cm , Small Washed Red Rug 3,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. This is an Afghan war rug that was washed using a special technique in Pakistan before it was shipped to us. There is a little bleeding, which is commonly seen in this type of war rug, located in three of the corners around the dark blue bullets into the surrounding red.
This war rug has a very nice abrash and the drawings are excellent. The images depicted in this rug in particular are rarely used and make this war rug really stand out from the others. An example of these drawings are the hand gun, an AK-74 instead of the usual AK-47 seen, and the RPG with an extra rocket. These are wonderfully done and this war rug will only become more beautiful over time..

Small Washed Red Rug 2
ID# 224, 63 x 79 cm , Small Washed Red Rug 2,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. This is an Afghan war rug that was washed using a special technique in Pakistan before it was shipped to us. It has lovely abrash to it and the wool is finer than most.
The use of a symmetrical pattern is well done with the added touch of grenades only at the bottom suggesting that the weaver miss calculated the size. This lends to the appeal of the traditional tribal form of weaving used by the nomads in Afghanistan. A real plus for collectors and non-collectors alike..

Small Washed Red Rug 1
ID# 223, 71 x 91 cm , Small Washed Red Rug 1,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. This is an Afghan war rug that was washed using a special technique in Pakistan before it was shipped to us. It has a nice abrash to it.
The staff at warrug.com all agree that the pattern seen in this war rug is exceptional. The continuity of the mixed geometric colors used in the helicopters, hand-grenades, and along the bullet border is lovely. The tribal aspect of small mistakes, such as the writing in the tanks all going in one direction except for one tanks text in the bottom left row, clearly shows the beautiful juxtaposition and the brilliant traditional appeal of nomadic, tribal weaving versus the ""perfection"" of common, Persian city carpets..

Large Tora Bora w/handgun and Chinook
ID# 221, 96 x 150 cm , Large Tora Bora w/handgun and Chinook,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. Its wool is hand spun and the sheen will be gorgeous as it oxidizes over time.
This map of Afghanistan remarkably highlights the Tora Bora region in the east and the images on the tips of the mountains appear to represent the frequent bombings in the area as the U.S. hunts for Osama bin Laden.
The drawings showcase many of the elements used in the war on terror: tanks, grenades, F-16s, Chinooks, and even a handgun.
This piece of art in the form of a war rug is sure to please collectors and non-collectors alike. To put it in the words of a pilot who flew the jets over Afghanistan and recently called to order a Tora Bora war rug, ""It really gets across what we were doing over there""..

Red Rug 15
ID# 220, 109 x 160 cm , Red Rug 15,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This war rug is one of the staffs' favorite at warrug.com. The color is vibrant and the sheen on this rug is extraordinary. There are images of AK-74s along the sides and wonderful drawings of a battery of anti-aircraft weapons. The rocket launchers are depicted in the likes of childhood toys. The use of colors in the images throughout this war rug is absolutely wonderful with innocence juxtaposed with the harsh reality of subtle military colors. The bullets along the border continue this color theme..

White Red Rug 2
ID# 219, 96 x 148 cm , White Red Rug 2,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect. War rugs in this style and pattern are most commonly seen with a red field so rugs whose background is natural wool are a rare delight and make up only 1 in every 50 or so. A rare addition in the colors is a muted, almost fuscia shade in 2 of the helicopters and a couple of the tanks, as well. The deep, rich navy blue along the outlying rifles and in 2 of the helicopters is lovely. The weaver of this war rug was quite the remarkable artist, with strong use of extraordinary symmetry in colors as well as design. The tanks are particularly well drawn..

Red Rug 14
ID# 218, 99 x 162 cm , Red Rug 14,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The sheen really stands out, as does the uncommon use of planes as the border. The shade of green used in the helicopters and as an accent throughout is gorgeous and rarely seen in war rugs. The consistent use of planes and flowers in small detail along the inner field is nice as is the use of the color white as a highlight. The drawing of the helicopters and tanks is extremely well done. This rug is an excellent example of a classic war rug and sure to be quite the conversation piece in any home or office..

Red Rug 13
ID# 217, 104 x 148 cm , Red Rug 13,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The drawing is well done with nice colors throughout,
The alternating pattern of the helicopters and tanks down the center sets off the symmetry with the rifles along the side. An interesting point as well, there are two small fighter planes off the two sides in the very middle of this war rug, with only one facing in the opposite direction of all the other machinery. The colors in the grenades is found throughout the rug with nice repeat of these colors in the bullets found along the border..

Red Rug 12
ID# 216, 99 x 150 cm , Red Rug 12,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This red rug is one of the staffs' favorite at warrug.com for many reasons. The first of which is the weavers use of small fighter jets throughout this war rug. This is done in the traditional sense that it is boring to the artist to weave blocks of one color, so she adds the element used in all-over designs, yet replaces the image traditionally seen as flowers with jets. Another point of interest is the nod to the soviet-era war rugs by including illegible text. The characters used is not exactly found in the English language and is a beautiful attempt to show the words that surround her life. Last, but certainly not least, is the unusual border seen in this war rug. Most red rugs depict weaponry or bullets as the border, the use of a benign pattern around the war images is interesting..

Afghan Victory over Soviets 2
ID# 214, 59 x 77 cm , Afghan Victory over Soviets 2,
Description: This pattern is no longer available in quantity like it was a couple of years ago. These rugs celebrate the Afghan victory over the Soviets (with substantial American assistance.) Rug is probably not woven in 1989, but instead celebrates the 1989 victory and the end of the war (and the beginning of the civil war).
Good drawing. Nice weapons.

This rug is also atypical in its quality. It is unusually finely knotted..

Description: New.

WTC
ID# 205, 61 x 77 cm , WTC,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. This is a simpler 9/11 war rug, but it is this somewhat tribal aspect that appeals to many of us at warrug.com. The navy blue in the flags is quite lovely, as is the dye of red used. The sky blue in the helicopter and highlighting the top of the World Trade Center and the olive sprig is refreshingly light. The fire in this war rug is not as harsh and dramatic as in the other 9/11 rugs, so the actual architecture and the symbol of peace seems to stand out more than in other war rugs of this design..

WTC
ID# 204, 61 x 77 cm , WTC,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is good. The pile is thicker on one end than on the other, but not by look, only by examination by hand. The drawing is simple and the only literate text is USA. There are no people falling out of this one, and the drawing is not as graphic as most 9/11 war rugs. This would be a good rug for someone who likes the idea of the commemoration, but has a difficult time with some of the other war rugs. The symbolism of peace with the two flags and the white dove holding an olive branch is nice..

ID# 200, 63 x 71 cm , Square Shaped World Trade Center, September 11, War Rug,

World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug with Black Aircraft Carrier
ID# 192, 59 x 81 cm , World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug with Black Aircraft Carrier,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent.

World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug with White Dove 2
ID# 190, 63 x 77 cm , World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug with White Dove 2,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. The wool is soft and fine and the sheen is beautiful. Quite interestingly, the artist was trying to convey a thought in text that is rarely seen. In the map of Afghanistan found in the background, you see in the bottom left some text. The bottom word is clearly meant to be Afghanistan, but the two words located above that are illegible. The staff at warrug.com can not even guess as to the artists intentions, as we have never seen any other words associated with the naming of their country in the World Trade Center rugs. This type of writing is a nod to the older, soviet-era war rugs, where there would often be Cyrillic lettering with no meaning clearly understood..

World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug
ID# 189, 59 x 81 cm , World Trade Center 9/11 War Rug,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug, like most war rugs of this style, is extremely well knotted and truly stands out as such. The only flaw is very minor. There is minor bleeding into the kilim and fringe at the top of the rug..

This is sure to be quite a collectible and will only look better over time as the wool oxidizes..

World Trade Center
ID# 184, 66 x 79 cm , World Trade Center,

World Trade Center
ID# 181, 66 x 79 cm , World Trade Center,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This is one of the best 9/11 rugs warrug.com has ever seen. The drawing is exceptionally done throughout the rug with extremely clear images. The aircraft carrier is like no other, the jets remarkably accurate, as is the entire ship. The water drawn in the lower edges is done by only the most experienced of weavers with great attention to details. This war rug is sure to be one that will be passed on generation to generation. A haunting testimony of the time..

World Trade Center
ID# 180, 66 x 79 cm , World Trade Center,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is extremely well knotted and its use of colors is very well done. There is the image of melting steel at the top of the World Trade Center on the upper left of this rug. In the background of this war rug is the outline of a map of Afghanistan colored in brown. The flags of the two countries are well drawn, as is the dove carrying an olive branch..

World Trade Center
ID# 178, 66 x 79 cm , World Trade Center,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The military colors throughout is not very common, and the use of these colors makes the aircraft carrier especially nice with an almost camouflage appeal/reference on our jets. There is all natural un-dyed wool in the far right of the Afghani flag and this is wonderful tribal element appeals to many collectors. The Xs seen throughout the rug is a pattern that many weavers will use to fill in long stretches of boring weaving with only one color. This is not usually found in 9/11 war rugs because of its detailed images..

World Trade Center
ID# 177, 61 x 79 cm , World Trade Center,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is extremely well knotted and truly stands out as such. World Trade Center #9
ID# 175, 61 x 79 cm , World Trade Center #9,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is extremely well knotted and truly stands out as such. The colors are exceptional in this rug and are used very nicely in the flags as well as the dove. The two contrasting blues are extremely beautiful. The spelling in this 9/11 rug is one of the clearest in all the war rugs we have at warrug.com. This is very rare and quite a collectible..

World Trade Center #8
ID# 174, 59 x 79 cm , World Trade Center #8,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is well knotted and the colors seem to match the child-like drawing in this rug. The water is shown in blue dots in the lower left corner and one gets the feeling this weaver is trying very hard to mimic the normally well-drawn 9/11 rugs because water is usually shown in only the finest examples of these war rugs. This is an example of a less experienced weavers work. The staff of warrug.com finds beginners tribal works wonderfully charming, and the juxtaposition of the haunting reference of that day combined with the innocent artistry makes this WTC war rug extremely unique..

World Trade Center #7
ID# 173, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center #7,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. This rug is extremely well knotted and truly stands out as such. The colors are exceptional in this rug and are used very nicely in the flags as well as the dove. The helicopter is nice in this war rug as well. There is a beautifully drawn outline of the map of Afghanistan very subtlety in light blue..

Large Tora Bora War Rug
ID# 155, 96 x 148 cm , Large Tora Bora War Rug,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. The unusual wool is clumpy and dense, allowing each knot to keep on its tuft. Out of many war rugs, it almost appears over-dyed at first, but then the viewer is taken in by the beautifully rich colors. The sky blue is particularly succulent, as each color gives way to a completely different texture.
The images are striking. The drawing is well done with a bit of a childish edge in a refreshingly bold way. This is evident in the map and the red ""Afghanistan"" text. So many war rugs contain multiple weaponry, but the juxtaposition of the Soviet armaments of tanks and APC mixed with the American M-16s and Chinook helicopters against the flecked-green mountain is simply gorgeous. A wonderful find for anyone!
There is a rare stripe-like look on the back from a thick wool double weft..

Tora Bora Chechen w/ Red Field
ID# 154, 104 x 142 cm , Tora Bora Chechen w/ Red Field,
Description: The condition of this war rug is new. Please also read the description for rug #153 for a lesson on just how special this war rug is since it uses the same Chechen style.
This war rug has a very nice double map motif. The use of American weaponry, the M-16s rather than the AK-47s seen in the Soviet-era war rugs, and the wonderfully drawn border tanks makes this rug a fascinating find to the collector and non-collector alike. The drawing of the jets being the same as the drawing of the jets in the red rugs makes this war rug an interesting study. It suggests that the tribal, nomadic weavers are familiar with one another's patterns..

Tora Bora Chechen w/ Light Field
ID# 153, 101 x 152 cm , Tora Bora Chechen w/ Light Field,
Description: The condition of this war rug is new. This rug is very unusual and this, along with rug #154, is something that even the staff at warrug.com has rarely seen.
The pattern in this war rug is somewhat unusual while at the same time, it is one that may be familiar looking. This is because of its realization of the classic Chechen structure, wool, and colors. Chechens are a mill-spun wool, synthetic-dyed version of the Afghan Kazak. You may recognize certain colors such as the rust red, navy blue, and abrashed light blue commonly found in Kazaks but until now, never seen in war rugs. Other similar qualities are the wavy weft threads with a grey wool warp and the unmistakable red kilim skirt. Most Chechens have a strong geometric pattern. The unique use of these two styles, the traditional Chechen juxtaposed with the new war themes makes this war rug outstanding..

Red Rug American Weapon 2
ID# 152, 96 x 168 cm , Red Rug American Weapon 2,
Description: This is a new war rug in good condition. These rugs have only started to appear late this year and warrug.com is proud to introduce the public to these designs containing this sort of mixture of weaponry. The pieces of Soviet-era remnants right along side the American weapons is a sign of the traditional morphing into the contemporary. A true testament of the times as two worlds of drastically different development stages collide in this new war. Sure to be a collectors prize in the years to come as the soviet weapons are completely fazed out of this art form and the American weapons reign. You will definitely pass these new war rugs on for several generations..

A real treat in war rugs of this format and design..

Red Rug American 1
ID# 149, 101 x 165 cm , Red Rug American 1,

Red Baghlani w/ Men in Tanks
ID# 148, 84 x 188 cm , Red Baghlani w/ Men in Tanks,
Description: The color of this Baghlani rug is unusual, in that it is red instead of blue or black. The secondary colors, mint green and ochre, are also unusual. The figurative element in this rug makes it unique. The rows of poppies are also significant..

Black Tank Border Runner w/ Airplane Burka
ID# 147, 79 x 318 cm , Black Tank Border Runner w/ Airplane Burka,
Description: This rug is one of a pair of war rugs in a runner format from the Soviet era. Both are very beautiful and in good condition given their age. Both rugs have all the best qualities on looks for in war rugs. They have super wool, excellent sheen, interesting and unique patterns, interesting structural elements, and rich colors.
The overall condition of this rug is very good, particularly given its Soviet era vintage. The condition issues are: there are a couple spots where a single knot is missing (see pictures), mostly from ""sarnach"" (means ""head of the tread, sarnach are spots where warp of weft threads have been tied to extend there length and there is either a small bump where the knot is or a tuft of foundation thread sticking up through pile.), there is low pile on one end, some of the ornamental fringe is missing (see pictures), and there is minor bleeding on one corner.
These issues taken into consideration, this is a super rug. Beautiful wool, well knotted, interesting design, nice structural elements, gorgeous sheen. The color has softened from a blue black to a charcoal and purplish black. It has nice abrash. The white trucks in the border exemplify the beautiful wool used in this war rug. The design is very unusual with the clunky trucks and APCs in the borders and the artistically drawn airplanes on the inner guard stripe. The planes appear to be both fighters and bombers.

Some war rugs feature a figure of a woman in a burka. These are mostly seen in the ""Golden Border"" style. This rug has the best example seen with one airplane showing the lattice face piece of the Afghan style burka. It is depicted in a grid of dots where the face is. This type of double imagery shows the craftiness of these Afghan folk artists to illustrate their human position in the world.
This rug really demonstrates the benefit of an older rug, as well as how beautiful and older war rug can be..

He secondary and tertiary colors are brighter than usual as well. Some of these brighter colors are: pink, chartreuse, turquoise, and electric blue. Very artistically done.
There is a nice variety of small motifs like birds and animals throughout the field.

Soviet Hand Rug
ID# 121, 101 x 148 cm , Soviet Hand Rug,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is perfect.
Some of the finer points of this rug, besides its super quality wool, would be the rug's nice colors and its lovely Farsi text.
This is really an excellent example of this style of war rug. These rugs are about the Afghan uprising against the Soviet -Puppet Government in 1978-79..

Pink Pakistan
ID# 120, 94 x 155 cm , Pink Pakistan,
Description: This new war rug is in perfect condition. The wool is quite good with nice abrash. This war rug is host to a rather unusual field color for this style, with interesting accents of chartreuse. The rug also has particularly good drawings of tanks and trucks along with unusual depictions of RPG launchers..

All Over Tanks
ID# 114, 104 x 190 cm , All Over Tanks,
Description: This war rug is extremely well knotted. The wool has a very good, soft feel to it with an even pile. There are several factors in this rug that any one of them alone would make this quite the collectors' item, but combined, really sets this war rug apart from the pack. The figures in the bottom left are of Afghan women in burkas, presenting an almost asexual human form. These silent testimonies of oppression along with the expertly drawn tanks are juxtaposed with the symbolic forms of the birds seen throughout this dynamic war rug..

World Trade Center #6
ID# 113, 59 x 79 cm , World Trade Center #6,
Description: This new war rug is in excellent condition. The color is very good throughout and the map of Afghanistan behind the scene is extremely well done. The air craft carrier with the planes all in a row is done with extraordinary precision. The inconsistent text in this 9/11 war rug is reminiscent of the confusing text seen in older war rugs.
There is the painfully haunting image of people falling between the two towers in the area above the dove uniting the two flags..

World Trade Center #5
ID# 112, 61 x 79 cm , World Trade Center #5,
Description: This new war rug is in good condition with some creases in the pile from being folded in transit. This will come out. This 9/11 rug, like the others we carry at WARRUG.com, has excellent use of color and is extremely well drawn. The text is clear and offers a contemporary, important commentary on the times..

World Trade Center #4
ID# 111, 61 x 77 cm , World Trade Center #4,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent.

World Trade Center #3
ID# 110, 59 x 84 cm , World Trade Center #3,
Description: The condition of this new war rug is excellent. The colors were beautifully used and the drawings and text are crystal clear. The fire coming out of the missile in the bottom right is impressive. The use of the symbolic dove between the two flags and the well drawn planes carefully aligned on the aircraft carrier makes this war rug quite the collectors' item..

World Trade Center #1
ID# 108, 63 x 71 cm , World Trade Center #1,
Description: This new war rug is in excellent condition. The colors are extremely nice throughout, and the images are hauntingly clear. The rug contains various scenes letting your eyes move and zero in on one area and the meaning behind each, or just to take in the overall theme as a whole.
The sharp drawing of the missile launching in the bottom right is particularly well done, as are the drawings of the planes in this war rug. Please allow us to also point out that there is an image in this one that may be a little hard to take, although rare in most 9/11 themed rugs and not as pronounced in this rug as in rug number 109, between the two towers near the top portion is a person falling..

2002 USA Yellow Map 8
ID# 107, 61 x 81 cm , 2002 USA Yellow Map 8,
Description: This is a new war rug with some minor bleeding around the border. These map rugs are wonderfully drawn, but the drawings on this one in particular truly stands out because of its reminiscence of Soviet-era war rugs. This creates an interesting culmination of the contemporary and traditional..

2002 USA Yellow Map 7
ID# 106, 61 x 77 cm , 2002 USA Yellow Map 7,
Description: The condition of this new map war rug is very good with only some minor bleeding around the red lettering. The wool is of good quality, the pile is wonderfully consistent, and its glossy appearance is like a work of art.
It should be noted that of all the 2002 Map war rugs we have seen at WARRUG.com, this rug is the best overall example of one. The drawing is clear and concise and this is by far one of the best flags we have seen drawn on a rug..

USA 2002 Yellow Map 6
ID# 105, 59 x 81 cm , USA 2002 Yellow Map 6,
Description: This is a new map war rug with only some minor bleeding around the color black. The U.S. and British flags are interesting in and of themselves with the contemporary war rugs, but this rug is, simply put, fascinating. It is the rare depiction of caves that makes this one so and is a true account of Afghanistan's strength in the war. Take note of the nicely placed touch of purple cotton pile at the uppermost cave..

2002 US Yellow Map 5
ID# 104, 61 x 77 cm , 2002 US Yellow Map 5,
Description: The condition of this new map war rug is perfect with only the usual minor bleeding around some of the red letters.
This rug has some really nice imagery and the text reads as BY ORDER OF YALOAJAN..

2002 Yellow Map 4
ID# 103, 66 x 77 cm , 2002 Yellow Map 4,
Description: This war rug is in new condition with some bleeding around the black letters.
The map is well drawn and the Afghan and Pakistan flags. This is one of the most interesting map/WTC rugs. In the context of the other rugs of this era and style, the two rectangular solids above the map can only be a reference to the WTC. In addition, you have the red speckles on two sides of the left tower and one side of the other tower. It is understated.
I like the plain field
because it accents the images. The map functions as an abstract form and has strong graphic presence. The variety of drawing techniques is varied and unique in this rug. There are geometric solids, with blocks of red speckles on the sides. The map is an amorphous blob, and yet it functions as a window onto the Tora Bora scene which looks like it sits behind the field color. The color of the F-16 flattens what is otherwise a realistic representation. There is text. The flags function as a flat emblem which is recognizable. All of these different techniques of representation are situated in the plain field which permits each technique to accent itself.
While the drawing may appear a unusual or awkward at a glance, I think this is one of the most interesting and engaging rugs not just of the map type or the WTC type but on the whole site.
It is also nice to have the name of the city where it is woven included..

2002 Yellow Map 3
ID# 102, 59 x 77 cm , 2002 Yellow Map 3,
Description: This 2002 Map war rug is in new condition with some common minor run of the color red into yellow at the top and bottom.
Each and every map war rug has something that makes that particular rug unique, and the thing that really stands out in this one is the nice text..

2002 Yellow Map 2
ID# 101, 61 x 77 cm , 2002 Yellow Map 2,
Description: This map war rug is in perfect, new condition.
The colors are exceptionally nice. What sets this apart from the other map war rugs is the unique addition of the flags representing the different countries of the U.S., Britain, Afghanistan and the Tora Bora region. These countries are rarely represented together on the same rug..

2002 Map Rug 1
ID# 100, 63 x 81 cm , 2002 Map Rug 1,
Description: This is a new rug in perfect condition. The rug has a beautiful US and Afghan flag, united by a symbolic white dove. It is made in the town of Sherberghan in Afghanistan..

Banana with Grenades Only
ID# 95, 109 x 227 cm , Banana with Grenades Only,
Description: This is a very good rug in a very unusual pattern. The very old Baluchi design centered in this rug is only used and seen in the very finest of rugs that come from western Afghanistan. This historical design features one very long six-sided medallion. But this rug incorporates more than this traditional symbol. It is a testimony of the times in which this artist lived. Subtly and hidden among the poppies and outside the lines of the featured medallion are several perfectly rendered small hand grenades. We can only speculate, as perhaps it was meant that although she has seen and experienced much more than most of us ever will, the strength of her inner core, her large medallion, will persevere in spite of the world around her changing. Much thought can be given as to what this artist was trying to say, and as with all art, interpretation is left to the one experiencing this beautiful rug..

12 tanks with 3 vertical vines
ID# 94, 124 x 175 cm , 12 tanks with 3 vertical vines,
Description: This simple war rug appears to be a beginners work. The knots are very uneven and there are several design glitches. An example is the vertical vine motif. There is a wide range of warp depression, which indicates someone with limited technical experience. The rug is charming in its simplicity. The design is reminiscent of a ""Two Ewer"" rug, without the ewers. The Farsi writing on the side of the tanks, usually reads ""tank tank"" but this example is beyond illegible. There is edge roll on the left corners. This happens when the weft are pulled too tight and corners roll under. This example is not serious.
The color is pleasing. It is muted and harmonious..

4 Solid medallions with small grenades
ID# 92, 122 x 206 cm , 4 Solid medallions with small grenades,
Description: This rug is in perfect condition. The pile is evenly trimmed, and the rug lays flat. The border is even and the guard stripes are very nice. The pattern is particularly attractive. The variation of colors used in medallions is a nice touch. . There is a nice variety of densely placed field motifs. A light turquoise is used as an beautiful accent to the rest of the colors. This is an attractive rug as well as being well knotted. Rug is slightly wider on bottom than top..

Hunting Rug with Cars
ID# 91, 117 x 193 cm , Hunting Rug with Cars,
Description: The condition of this rug is excellent. It is the best quality of rugs from Herat. On a scale of one to 10 it is a 9.5. Rug is soft and supple with a felt like feel. The felt like feel is what we consider the best. Rug shows many colors throughout a broad range. There is some expected tip fading in the lightest of the four blue colors. This is typical for this color in these rugs. It has a nice oxidation shown in color and sheen. Thin border is common in hunting rugs, and the bands of pattern on top and bottom are very nice. There are tree of life motifs in corners of field. Imagery includes the eagle attacking a lamb motif..

Light Field Runner with Stylized Helicopters
ID# 82, 77 x 297 cm , Light Field Runner with Stylized Helicopters,
Description: This is an older war rug in good condition. There is some minor tip fading in the dark blue and a small, dark mark 1inch wide by 9 inches long running diagonally up towards the bottom right helicopter. The weft threads are wool and the back of this rug is brinish-looking. Both of these are consistent with older rugs.
This war rug has the most understated of patterns, with the helicopters blending nicely into the pattern, essentially camouflaging them. This rug has an overall beautiful and light palette. The wool has a smooth and yet slightly sharp feel to it with excellent sheen..

Short Pile Bomber/Copter/Tank
ID# 81, 112 x 206 cm , Short Pile Bomber/Copter/Tank,
Description: This war rug is in excellent condition.
This pattern was common in war rugs from1997-98, but the wool, structure, and color were all slightly different. The earlier rugs have long, thick pile made from dry and very dusty wool. They also had longish, natural colored plain weave ends with long, brown fringe. This new war rug keeps the wonderful pattern, but little else. This rug has short pile made from soft and lustrous wool which is nicely oxidized and has a very lovely sheen. The colors in this one are more muted with sienna and olive green and a field that is a cooler color blue than the older rugs. Simply put, this is an excellent war rug..

White Field with Humvees
ID# 80, 112 x 196 cm , White Field with Humvees,
Description: This extraordinary war rug is in very good condition with some minor bleeding throughout into the light field color, as seen in the photographs.
This war rug is a wonderful piece with beautiful wool, attractive colors with a very broad range, and a magnificent story design element. This rug is highly recommended by the staff at WARRUG.com because of its unique feature of Humvees. This is the first we have seen of a well-proportioned Humvee with a turret and is sure to be a delight to collectors and non-collectors alike..

4 Medallion Baghlani
ID# 79, 101 x 142 cm , 4 Medallion Baghlani,
Description: War rugs of this type typically depict weapons only arranged in rows, sometimes with secondary motifs of flowers or people. This war rug is different because it has medallions. There are some design elements of this war rug that make it look Baghlani: one knot wide yellow lines around border, the helicopters, the colors used. But the definitive element to the Baghlani attribution is the structure. The knot structure, size and dimension are typical of rugs from Baghlan. The condition of this war rug is new and perfect. The pile is dense and short..

Burka-Style War Rug with 2 Tanks
ID# 73, 101 x 193 cm , Burka-Style War Rug with 2 Tanks,
Description: Good.

Pictorial with Grey River War Rug
ID# 70, 84 x 137 cm , Pictorial with Grey River War Rug,
Description: The strong and beautiful dark colors in this rug set a somber tone for the occupied town depicted. The field is a deep navy blue and the border is primarily black. These two hues, while similar values (light and dark) offset each other nicely chromatically.
This is a subtle and tasteful rug with subtle motifs.
I have seen rugs with this sort of river motif which come from Qala-e Nau, north of Herati, in western Afghanistan..

Sumac with Plane Border War Rug
ID# 69, 216 x 269 cm , Sumac with Plane Border War Rug,
Description: This one of two sumacs I found recently. Very unusual. I have never seen a rug like this before. The traditional field diamond motifs is lovely. The plane border gives movement and direction. Colors are great.
This rug has a couple of charming idiosyncrasies. First is the pattern modulation on one end. The second is a change in field color where the weaver must have run out of orange-red and shifted to a vermillion. The vermillion is used though out the rug as an accent.
This rug is estimated to be from the late eighties. There is a subtle fade to the colors on the top (see picture). Very minor wear.
Good quality and condition for vintage rug..

Old Herati War Rug with Candy Cane Helicopters
ID# 67, 119 x 193 cm , Old Herati War Rug with Candy Cane Helicopters,
Description: .

Old War Rug with Burkas
ID# 66, 114 x 190 cm , Old War Rug with Burkas,
Description: Very unusual and excellent rug. Vintage and shows some age.
This rug is an excellent argument for the figures on the top and bottom being women in burkas. The shape is not unlike airplane motifs, but some of these have two definite eyes, and the central figure on the bottom even has a flat red mouth. These figures, especially the one with the sad expression contextualize the war in a way not seen often in rugs. This rug places people emotional reaction in the context of the wars.
The composition of this rug is beautiful. The two tanks function like irregular medallions. The strong pattern of Kalashnikovs and grenades in the field are beautiful. The small size of the guns and grenades are effectively juxtaposed with the larger form of the tanks, as well as the medium sized mechanized armor motifs in the border.
Color: The colors are lime yellow and almost black brown. Black is a traditional Muslim color of mourning which jibes with the sad face. There is some fading in the yellow, it is more saturated lime green / yellow on the back. Nice geometric guard stripe on the outside.
Condition note: please see photos. There is some bleeding of the brown into the yellow border. This is mostly noticeable only from the back. Short pile allover, with very short pile in places, with knots showing. Some colors seem to have oxidized. These things noted, the condition is good. Rug is clean and strong. It still has a lot of life.
This is a great piece for a collector, particularly one who is interested in the reality of women in Afghanistan..

Ten Tank, Brown Field, White Stars
ID# 65, 112 x 198 cm , Ten Tank, Brown Field, White Stars,
Description: This rug is a good example of this style. The large size is nice. Its condition is perfect. . Short and even pile. Beautiful long brown fringe. It is typical Baluch with the overall dark palette with a touch of white for accent..

Bomber War Runner (Light Border)
ID# 64, 77 x 355 cm , Bomber War Runner (Light Border),
Description: This rug is one of a pair. The differ primarily in their border designs. Both rugs feature two shades of blue, two shades of sienna, two reds and white.
The top 30 inches of this rug has a dark blue field color.
This rug features a secondary design element that is not seen in its companion. Running down the middle are small burgundy armored personnel carriers. Nice touch.
Both of these rugs are very attractive. The design is dense so the war motifs do not immediately jump out. Also, the kilim ends and fringe are particularly attractive. Condition is perfect.
Rugs are traditionally made in pairs. It is highly unusual to have both available simultaneously..

Bomber War Runner (Gul Border)
ID# 63, 81 x 355 cm , Bomber War Runner (Gul Border),
Description: This rug is one of a pair. The differ primarily in their border designs. Both rugs feature two shades of blue, two shades of sienna, two reds and white.
This rug represents the ""Bomber/Tank/Chopper"" motif. These were quite common a couple of year ago, but never in the runner format. When I sold these at the flea market, people inevitably stared for a minute then said, ""OH my gosh! Those are helicopters! Are not they?""
The field is deep ultramarine, which makes the cobalt blue pop out where it is used on helicopters, bombers and details.
The combination of the grid layout of the armaments juxtaposed to the more fanciful motifs of combs, plants, and flowers in vases is very nice. In the center, lengthwise, of this rug the floral motifs turn to a crimson color for one foot. Some of the burgundy has very mildly bled, which is hard to notice except from the back.
The pattern is very attractive. Contrasts are set up by white on the dark field. Each part of the pattern employs the white differently, creating a the attractive contrast. The outermost border is a light, detailed and linear motif. The main border features white hooked medallions. The field is dominated by the irregular shapes of the weapons (large) and the floral motifs (small).
It would be nice to keep these two rugs together, so if you have an interest in both, we can give a bulk discount..

Armored Column & Mosque (dark foreground)
ID# 61, 91 x 142 cm , Armored Column & Mosque (dark foreground),
Description: Like rug number 61, this rug depicts the city of Herati with an armored column rolling into town and jets with anti-aircraft fire over the mountains to the north of town.
This appears to be a night scene. The colors are much darker than rug 61.
This rugs colors are very nice. The foreground grey looks to be natural undyed wool, and it has very nice abrash. This grey has a very nice speckling of light and dark grey. The tan color in the mountains is natural wool of a different color. It too has very nice, subtle variations of tone. Both of these low hue colors contrast beautifully with the primary red and blue in the mosque.
Like rug 61, the patterns of the objects depicted is excellent. The round red trees and their trunks, the rectilinear armored column, the pointed arches of the mosque, the jagged mountains and the fanciful airplanes all contrast beautifully. These different shapes set up an attractive rhythm in the rug..

Armored Column & Mosque War Rug (light foreground)
ID# 60, 89 x 127 cm , Armored Column & Mosque War Rug (light foreground),
Description: This rug depicts the mosque in Herati with an armored column rolling into town and jets over the mountains to the north.
The colors are simple and strong. The contrast of the red jets in the blue sky is very nice, as is the abstracted quality of the jets. The mountains are undyed wool which is a very nice color.
The variety of drawn pattern is good. The two rows of round trees in the foreground, the boxy images of the column, the arches of the mosque, the jagged mountains and the jets in the sky all contrast one another well. The variety has a very pleasing effect..

8 Tank War Rug #3
ID# 59, 91 x 137 cm , 8 Tank War Rug #3,
Description: An excellent example of this style of rug. Knots are consistent sizes, pile is very even, and the wool is good quality.
The colors are rich and the design is very nice. I think the starburst motifs are more attractive than the 4 leaf clover patterns seen on similar rugs. Also the field is more sparely decorated, which is nice.
The details are good too. The warp wool is very good quality and the selvedge is very strong and the warps are fully covered by the goat hair overcast. The kilim end and finishing knots are well done too.
The overall drawing and depictions of the tanks are beautiful..

Speckled Blue and Tan Afghan War Rug
ID# 55, 119 x 199 cm , Speckled Blue and Tan Afghan War Rug,
