Soviet War Story Afghan War Rug with Crossed Arms and Blue in Border |

The condition of this new Afghan war rug is excellent. It is densely woven with strong wool. This rug is an example of the ""Soviet story"" sub style of the small Afghan map war rugs. The top row of helicopters shows a series of images like an animation sequence. It shows the attack on a Soviet helicopter, probably with a US Stinger missile, and the helicopter catching fire. This style of rug has been fairly plentiful for the last couple of years, and warrug.com searches for unusual and atypical examples of this kind of rug. This rug is unusual because it is particularly finely knotted, and has a beautiful traditional Turkmen border. The traditional border accentuates the most interesting part of Afghan war rugs, that is the combination of a traditional art form and contemporary motifs. There is a small number of these yellow map rugs which feature three maps of Afghanistan. One large map centrally located, with two smaller maps in the bottom corners. This is an attractive design. An additional attractive feature are the crossed AK-47s and rocket launchers. The symmetry is nice. Until the US eliminated the Taliban regime, this style of rug was woven by refugees in Pakistan. After we took out the Taliban these weavers were able to return to their native homes and produce these rugs around Mazar I'Sharif and Sherberghan. |
