War Carpet Fuzz on back of rug indicating new condition

This photo is from the inside of a new condition saddle bag, so it has had not wear on the floor, so the the fuzz is preserved.

When a rug sits in a pile it does not loose the fuzz on the back. When it is trod underfoot the friction against the floor buffs off the fuzz and eventually polishes the back to fine sheen, if the wool is good.

This rug has been used on the floor, so one does not see the fuzz on the back.

This is, perhaps, one of the oldest war rugs on Warrug.com, and it has had considerable wear and a couple or repairs. Looking at the back one can see the lack of fuzz and a gentle sheen on the back of the knots.

Notice all the stray, curly, white hairs crossing other knots. That is the "fuzz" and it indicates a rug has not been used on the floor.

This rug was probably never meant to be used on the floor, and the "fuzz" on the back suggests it never has been use.
