The blue background of this rug is sumac, or weft brocade, and the red vase, flowers, are knotted pile Rug #1602 - Vase of Flowers Sumac Rug with Helicopter Border " is a very early war rug in the gul-i-birjista technique where there is knotted pile on a ground of weft float brocade.

This photo of early 1980's rug #1602, Vase of Flowers War Rug, clearly shows the mix of sumac, or weft float brocade, and pile. The white and blue are flat weave while the red and brown borders are knotted pile.
