Butterfly mines, like those depicted in this border motif were dropped by Soviets. They fluttered to the ground and exploded when touched or moved. One story reported to us was of villages covered with these at night, so when morning came people could not move around outside. The mines were plastic and bright colors, so they were deliberately attractive to children.
